The Ivanovo Rock Monastery is not easily reached, as it requires some solid climbing up rugged stone steps that are especially challenging if they are wet from the morning dew. But in this case, the juice is worth the squeeze. And speaking of squeezing, expect to do just that as you enter the tight crevasse that forms the entry to this UNESCO-protected site. Inside are frescoes depicting the final days of Jesus’ life on Earth. Knowing your New Testament can be a great help, especially if you don’t have a knowledgeable guide.

This is a ruined fortress and town from the medieval period in time. The day we visited there was no entrance fee. You walk up a lot of steps to reach the main entry and there are good maps, info and reconstruction diagrams about the site in English. If you take your time you can explore for several hours and imagine how it was when it was complete. It had a turbulent past so obviously not alot remains. There are many signs in English to explain the site and it is very atmospheric and situated in a beautiful landscape. There is free parking below the fortress and a toilet and shop, which was not open when we visited.

When I got out of the tour van I was amazed at the beauty of this monastery built into the side of the mountain. It's absolutely incredible! There are quite a few steps to navigate alongside the mountain to visit the different rooms. You get to see how the Monk's lived. There is also a new monastery at the bottom where I was lucky enough to meet the resident Monk and receive a blessing. A gorgeous and incredible monastery in Bulgaria. A must see!

Ruse is an open, pretty, neatly structured and good-atmosphere-breathing city. This square is no exception. Pleasant for walking around or sitting on one of the benches. Surrounded by nice architecture.
