We visited the Prehispanic site of Canada de la Virgen with Rossana as our guide. It was an amazing activity about 30 minutes outside of San Miguel de Allende. The archaeological site has only been open to the public since 2011. The tour involved a lot of walking because public vehicle admittance is highly regulated to preserve the integrity of the area. The construction of the pyramid is linked to astronomic markers and the surrounding geography. Without a knowledgeable tour guide, a visitor might miss much of the unique features of the area. It provides a glimpse into the advanced astronomy that the civilizations of Mesoamerica incorporated into their traditions. We were very impressed with our guide Rossana who was instrumental in the excavation of the site. Rossana's husband met us in San Miguel de Allende and drove us to the site where we met Rossana. After the tour of the site we were served a delicious Prehispanic meal cooked by Jesus. After our meal, Rossana gave a short talk with photos of the sun and moon positioning in relation to the pyramid. It was an excellent excursion from San Miguel de Allende and we strongly recommend it.
