Kurasfossen Power Station

Kurasfossen 1 power station near Glamos was built in 1896 to provide electricity to the copper mines – the Storwartz, King’s mine and Muggruva. When the Roros Copperworks had to restructure its debts in 1936, it was taken over by the Roros electricity works. The first facility in Norway to provide high voltage power to end-users, the museum now houses old turbines, magnetising dynamos, marble control panels and other antique electrical equipment.

Roros Museum Olav's Mine

Reviewed By C9373LXiand

The Olavsgruva lies 13 km East of Roros centre. The view changes slowly from green fields of grass to forests of dwarf birch, to heaths and moors of bracken , yellow reindeer lichen and heather. Suddenly we saw superstructures and buildings in wood, large areas of worthless ore and the parking and entrance to the Olavsgruva mine. The information we were given at the start of the tour was precise and honest, no elaborations, none of tragedy. The Olavsgruva was opened in the 17th century and was finally closed in 1972 so it is, in my opinion, a very relaxed way of discovering what a copper mine actually looks like. After the introduction "uptop" we walked down the path and sloping transport shaft which mine workers walked for more than 3 centuries. The temperature down here is 4 degrees. We had been advised to have good warm clothing and footwear, so we had our hiking boots on. There is adequate lighting and the pumps down here make sure that the path, though moist, is never directly wet. What do I remember of the mine itself ?The sharp blue of vitriol (copper stained water seeping down the walls), the veins of quartz, the dull colour of the copper ore are impressive backdrops. These 10 -15 metres high halls of roughly broken walls are as impressive as the Gothic cathedrals of the 12th century. I am deeply impressed with what these miners with their tools and ingenuity achieved in their constant search for the copper lode

Ratvolden

Johan Falkberget himself worked in the northern mines from an early age until he was 26. After 14 years in Oslo, he returned home to Rugeldalen in 1922 where he built and worked Ratvolden farm until his death in 1967. The farm lies 600 m from Falkberget?s birthplace by the Rugelsjoen lake. The old farmhouse at Ratvolden is now a museum. The Falkberget-Ringen literary society is responsible for guided tours of Ratvolden that give an insight into Falkberget?s life and oeuvre as well as into the nature and culture his books cover. There is a marked turn-off to Ratvolden from Route 30, about 20 km from the centre of Roros in the direction of Trondheim. The area is always open for walkers. From the car park at Ratvolden there are several marked paths that take you into ?Falkberget?s realm? ? the northern mines. In the summer, special guided walks are arranged, presented in a separate programme and available from the Roros Tourist Office, the Ratvolden Museum. At the entrance to the museum area there is a small café called Litjklettstuggu that sells books, art and gift items associated with Johan Falkberget.

Exhibitions Hiort Engan: One of the most colourful historical figures of Roros was Peder Hiort (1715-1789), director of the Copperworks, church builder, theologian and historian. At his country retreat at Engan by the Glama river he planted a baroque garden, the remains of which can still be enjoyed by visitors. It has tree-lined roads and paths, arbours, fountains and sculptures, all in carefully arranged symmetry. Also worth a visit is the restored Hiort-church from 1765.
