Serra Penha

The Serra Penha is a very pretty hilltop park that dominates Guimaraes and offers stunning views of the town and surrounding areas. The park is terraced and is covered in large granite monoliths. The 5 euro return trip is worth the money. Even if you only have a spare 2 hours you can make this trip.

Cascata do Arado

This is such a beautiful place to take children. At 11 and 13, mine are old enough to scramble about the rocks and paddle in the river near the bridge downstream. if you go further up and over the small plateau, you get to an even lovelier part where there are libellulas (dragonflies but it's such a lovely word in Portuguese I felt I had to add it) and smooth-rocked pools. It's worth the windy roads that give one rather a headache!

This is such a wonderful historical place from the the Roman times. The ruins shed so much light on the Roman occupation of the area. Settled up the hill in the woods. Such an amazing sight. Great place to spend a few hours away from the "Modern" world and learn a bit of the history of Esposende.
