The Old Mill Inn

actually made to feel quite uncomfortable

Reviewed By alanmV7784VI

I feel as though I should apologise because we obviously offended the waiter/manager greatly because I assume that's why he was so rude and unpleasant. So I'm sorry we drove a 7 hour round trip to try this restaurant on the recommendation of friends, I'm sorry I listened to them I'm sorry we paid £250 for b&b and a meal and were made to feel like unwelcome gate crashers, £750 total for table I'm sorry that I wasn't driving as I would have simply got up and left when it all kicked off, but as I'm not as rude as our 'friendly' waiter, I didn't want to ruin the others' night. I'm sorry we made the hotel feel that we were going to 'do a runner' as we were told more than once that we had to settle the entire bill before 'we left the table' that night. So it all kicked off when I asked if I could have a starter portion of the lentil daal on the mains menu. It's often served as a starter or a side dish so I thought it was worth asking. I had seen some social media of the Indian dishes and they looked good so wanted to try, but not as my main. The harrumphing and storming to the kitchen should have been my time to get up and leave, but I took my naughty schoolboy telling and stayed My wife then went 'crazy' and asked if they had any fresh chilli. Cue another strop. 'Modern Scottish cuisine reinvented', but don't ask for any spice up north! It was only a question and that shouldn't be a cue for downright rudeness. But the order complete, we expected some calmness. But it was the six year old who didn't get their present strop that followed, with every dish being hissed onto the table. So much so that we all ended up looking at the table in case we made eye contact with the serpent of service. This all came from the two questions, unless there was something else that we had done to mortally offend him. If so, again, I'm sorry It seems that the 'deal' of dinner bed & breakfast made them worry about us ripping them off with our orders. The daal was £4 more than the prawn cocktail, but my main was £9 less than the steak. So I wasn't trying to rip them off but lord was I made to feel as though I was. And the worst bit was, the daal was ok, but the prawn cocktail was better. And the steak at £27 was not great. The bar has 'a wide range of beers and whiskies to enjoy', just no where to drink them apart from your dining stool. So not really a hotel, more a restaurant with rooms. So I'm sorry that this has reinforced the reputation of Scotland being overpriced and unwelcoming. That was genuinely the most unpleasant dining experience I've had , the food being ok but the experience was horrible, really uncomfortable. But the following day, the Seafield Arms at Cullen restored some faith, with good food and FRIENDLY STAFF, amazing eh

Big “thank you” to Elaine

Having sold our house in England, arrived at Forres with no accommodation booked. Elaine at The Carlton Hotel booked us in and really went above and beyond to look after us. She is an amazing asset to the hotel and is typical of all the friendly people we have met at Forres. Would definitely stay here again.

Charming B&B in Forres

Reviewed By imbsjs

During a Scotland tour in January we stayed at 6 Gordon Street for two nights. What a gem! Our hostess, Mrs Ruth Marland, went out of her way to make us feel at home. We had our own sitting room with television and the bed in the tastefully decorated bedroom (also has a TV) was one of the most comfortable ones I have ever slept in! Everything was immaculate. We had delicious breakfasts with freshly squeezed fruit juices, a variety of eggs, homemade breads, jams and everything you could wish for. Everything beatifully served. Mrs Marland, who is a cordon bleu cook, knows the area extremely well and gave us useful tips on what to see. We will definitely come back!
