Shanklin Beach is a beautiful, carefully tended stretch of sand on the Isle of Wight. Families appreciate the lifeguards, as well as the kids’ play area. And while there’s quite a hill separating the town from the beach, don’t worry—a lift makes it easy to tote all your beach paraphernalia down to the sand.

Sizzlers Restaurant at Holliers Hotel

Despite this restaurant being empty every evening we walked past our experience was excellent. We were the only two customers but Declan was very attentive and explained the menu very well. We were even allowed to choose the background music. We opted for chicken sizzler being the theme of the restaurant and in a manner of speaking the "signature" dish. Very good portion served piping hot with french fries and a choice of sauce. Very reasonably priced and one of our most enjoyable meals during our recent four night break. An excellent experience!Holliers' carvery is also well worth trying. See my other review.

Carvery Restaurant

Reviewed By Becky W

My partner and I were visiting the island for the weekend and fancied a carvery on Sunday.First impression should have encouraged me to walk out the door, it seemed disorganised and poorly run, but I continued in hopes I was wrong. We wasnt informed where to go and what to do upon arrival. I assumed wrong that we would be greeted seated and a drinks order taken. So we followed people in front of us, who were also unsure. We got to the till and there were around 15 people in front of us. Chef was at the till than in the kitchen and told us about his disappointment but that theyd done 250 dinners already today. We got our food, missed out on the homemade yorkshires. Staff friendly enough to start. We sat at our table and wondered how in the past 15 minutes our drinks hadnt arrived at our table. We sat down to eat our food, and asked the waitress for our drinks. We waited and asked her again with no result so went to the bar to ask for our drinks. Unfortunately the famous gravy wasnt to my liking at all I couldnt continue eating. I love gravy so usually have it all over my plate. My partner had about small ladel full and he liked it. The staff did graciously offer me another plate of food (luckily I only had one slice of meat, yorkshires, potaoes and stuffing, so not much. The chef also came with another gravy which was a lovely surprise and had our drinks come we would have left feeling reasonably satisfied. We started to eat, asked for our drinks again. Continued for a few more mouthfuls, I asked the waitress to chase our drink order. She said she would, disappeared and when she came back she walked straight past us and didnt update us on the progress. As we were desperate for a drink at this point, very annoyed and needed something to assist washing down the food we sat and waited without eating further. We waited somemore and it got to 30 minute mark so I went up to the bar, this time. I waited 5 minutes to be served as there was a man in front of me. I explained our food is going cold and weve been waiting for 30-40 minutes for a drink. The bar man appeared a little sympathetic but didnt apologise or attempt to make any amends. He explained that noone had given him any order, despite my partner going up to remind him 10-15 minutes earlier. He started to make the drinks. I took mine back to the table. Unfortunately upon returning my partner was stood up with his coat on. He said theres no point now and I felt the food, It had no warmth left in it. It had gone completely cold. What a waste of £20!We went to the bar to tell the barman we were leaving to which he seemed unbothered and again no attempts to make amends. So we asked for management and explained the lady carving was the manager. We went over and explained. Her response was "drinks are nothing to do with me", we reiterated that we had left almost a full plate and her response was "All right, okay". We walked away, probably with our mouths open in disbelief and had nothing further to say but "absolutely disgusting"Not a single apology between them. We were shocked and disgusted by the service. Whomever owns this resturant or hotel, although you recieve lots of custom, you cannot put a price on customer service by staff who care about the customer experience. We went back to our hotel, told everyone what happened and they directed us to The Mill Bay Carvery which they said is much better. They were right. Not the best carvery we have been to but amazing staff and we enjoyed 2 courses (including apple pie and custart and treacle spong an custard). The Mill Bay Carvery also has spectacular views of the ocean.

Lovely looking pub. But smaller on the inside than you expect. Though I think there was an upstairs dining area too. A somewhat typical decor inside, warming log burners, comfy seats, but tables all fairly close to each other. However food was well worth it. Crab and lobster soup was superb, prawn cocktail was full of tasty prawn. Duck in blackberry and port sauce was excellent. Burger was one of the best I've tasted. Thick tasty fresh meat. Excellent crispy chips. Portions huge! Recommend this place. And suggest you book a table in advance. We were lucky but it was a wet Monday night.

We made a reservation and found the food and service good but there was something that we couldn’t put our finger on and then we realised it was the dining room. The room felt sterile to us. We cannot fault the food or service though. We finished our meal and asked to have our coffee in the bar area.Thank you for your review but we found the sterile comment was rather odd as we have many comments about how clean we keep our restaurant with low music playing but of course its the food that really matters. .The pictures of our restaurant are on our websitte for anyone who may find they need to have a look.

Fantastic return visit to Vernon’s Cottage, which is simply our favourite restaurant on the island. From the lovely owners whom we sat and spoke to and whom talked openly talked about their resident ghost, to the fantastically fresh cooked food, to the romantic / relaxed candlelit ambiance, all was superb and faultless in every way.The food was tasty, well priced, good value for money and fresh. The service was quick and the food piping piping hot. It was also so nice to have that personal touch of chatting with the owners, in such a relaxed, beautiful environment.Would most definitely recommend and will certainly look to return.
