This is such a great little statue in center of town. It was decorated with Santa hat. After seeing road runners all over the desert it was nice to see a huge one and pose for pictures !

A very nice lady at the hotel recommended this place for a glass of wine an/or tasting. We did a tasting and were pleasantly surprised. Can't speak for the sweet wines but we really liked the dry reds. And the service was great. I heartily recommend their wines.

Fort Stockton Visitor Center

Reviewed By capitollover - Austin, Texas

The visitor's center has films, displays, and information about Ft. Stockton and the area. The staff was very knowledgeable, and directed me to murals, the fort, and statures. There are quite a number of Western statues at the visitor's center, as well as the giant Road Runner Statue further downtown, at the intersection of Main & E. Dickinson Blvd, .1 mi..

The building is located in the original Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railroad Depot constructed in 1911. I had not even heard of the Mexico and Orient Railroad. The South Orient line is one of only seven rail gateways between the United States and Mexico. Who knew?

You can also learn about early settlement of the area and the history of the "Buffalo Soldiers" (Black soldiers) company housed at Fort Stockton.

Look for the numerous statues of pioneer life at high points around the grounds.

What a fun place! Live music in the weekends, board games, and lattes with ghost peppers!?!! Stopped by in the way to and from Big Bend when passing through. Not far off the path, definitely worth the detour. Coffees and lattes were great, did not try the food, and the staff was great. The selection of flavors leaves you with a bit of analysis paralysis, thankfully they have a few concoctions made up to choose something fun and different. Great hours and definitely a different look than your typical chain coffee shop! Hope to have some time to play next time we pass through.

Historic Fort Stockton

Reviewed By capitollover - Austin, Texas

The fort has 6 original structures/sites (the parade grounds are listed as a site) scattered around the original area of the fort. One of the buildings serves as the visitor's center. You self-guide (walk) around to the other buildings. There is no shade, so don't visit if it is 100 degrees or more (which it is in the summer) unless you like heat. I suggest taking a water bottle, wearing a hat, and using sunscreen as there is no shade between the buildings. The whole area looks to cover about 2 or 3 city blocks.

If you have never visited a frontier fort in Texas or any fort occupied by the "Buffalo Soldiers", it is worth a look. There is a lot of history here.

There is an admission fee. $3.00 for adults, $2.50 for Seniors, $2.00 for children. It is open Sept.-May 9:00-5:00 Mon-Sat. and 9:00-6:00 June-Aug.

Historic Old Pecos County Jail

Reviewed By Walker S - San Diego, California

We enjoyed our tour and got a feeling of how prisoners experienced being locked up. The old Pecos County Jail was built in 1883 and enlarged in 1913. The tour includes going inside the actual cells of the jail. It is located in the Fort Stockton historic district on the south side of courthouse square. Exhibits include law enforcement pictures and artifacts from Pecos county. Prisoners were held on the 2nd floor of the jail, while the ground floor housed various sheriffs, deputies, and jailers through the years until 2000, when the last sheriff retired and moved out. The museum is operated by the Pecos County Historical Commission. It is an interesting place to visit and you really understand the spartan conditions of the 1880's prisoner.

Another page in Texas history with The 9th and 10th Cavalry, .. At Fort Stockton it was 4 companies of the 9th Cavalry, one of the new regiments created for the black men knows as "Buffalo Soldiers .. Name given by the Indians to these African American troopers ,they compared the soldiers to that of the Buffalos and their endurance, speed and fighting spirit to that of a bison. The soldiers accepted the name of a respect and honor. They fought against the comanche's, and assisted in guard patrol in Arizona. They were recruited in Louisiana and Kentucky.
To see also the tomb of A.J. Royal in the old fort cemetery, Sherif who was murdered in Fort Stockton. No one was ever arrested for the crime, which continues to be one of the biggest mysteries of the city ...
Small cemetery , not much to see but very interesting to understand the history of the West !
