Top 8 Resorts in Isola d'Ischia, Italy

April 26, 2023 Elouise Mccaul

The largest and many say most beautiful island in the Bay of Naples, Ischia is renowned for its curative spas. Ferries and hydrofoils connect Naples to Ischia Porto, the main town. Nearby at Ischia Ponte (connected to the main island by a foot bridge) are the magnificent Castello Aragonese and Guevara Tower. Forio on the island’s west coast, Lacco Ameno in the northwest and Sant’Angelo in the south are the liveliest resort towns. Casamicciola Terme in the north is one of Europe’s oldest spas.

Beautiful secluded resort on Ischia

Reviewed By 902mingw

My wife and I spent an unforgettable few nights here as a part of our honeymoon in Italy. I first found Mezzatorre through American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts and booked through the program, which provided a whole host of benefits. We did receive/use an upgraded sea view room, spa credit, and late check out during our stay. Ischia island is the more unassuming sister to Capri in the Gulf of Naples and is a short ~45 minute boat ride away from the city's port. We traveled by train from Rome, took the public ferry and was met by a private transfer car at the Ischia port for a scenic 20 minute drive through winding island roads to reach the wonderfully private Mezzatorre grounds. All in all, our travel time from Rome was just ~3 hours without any rushed connections. They also arranged our car back to the port on the day of check out. The hotel does offer other transfer options and after seeing others arrive and depart from the private dock at the hotel, I just might book their private boat transfer next time! We were met by the exceptionally courteous Salvatore at the front desk for a seamless check in and brief tour of the grounds. We had a stunning first impression of the well manicured and decorated resort with beautiful views of the sea and other parts of the island. Salvatore and the rest of the concierge handled any and all requests during our stay with great speed and diligence. Our room was not yet ready on arrival around 2pm, so we had lunch at their outdoor lunch restaurant La Baia, where the dining manager would be informed when our room was ready and this was relayed to us just as we finished our meal. Our sea view room was situated just above La Torre restaurant looking toward the main tower. The Aragonese architecture and designs throughout the resort really impressed. The room itself was well appointed with thyme scented toiletries and a fully stocked fridge/minibar including a multitude of complimentary non-alcoholic drinks and snacks. Mini wine bottles and cocktails in the room were available for purchase. We were also pleasantly greeted by a bottle of Prosecco on ice and a very warm hand-written card noting our celebration of our honeymoon. We were able to enjoy it on our room's private outdoor patio with 2 lounge chairs as well as a small table with 2 chairs. This would have been a great place to have in-room breakfast had we chose to do have it. Of note, not all rooms have this much outdoor space and others had terraces from a higher vantage point. For 3 nights and 4 days, we enjoyed the resort so much that we only left the grounds once for dinner in the nearby town of Laco Ameno. The hotel provides on-demand complimentary transport by golf cart/buggy to this town that is just ~5 minutes away by drive. We spent most of our time by the water where there was ample lounge chairs available. During the days, we swam in the private bay/cove, used the paddle boards to venture out farther, and enjoyed the thermal spas. We also used the tennis courts and gym, which were nice. The warmed seawater pool was great to have, but swimming in the calm cove is not to be missed! We didn't book any excursions this time, but saw many groups head out on boats via the private dock. Dining at Mezzatorre was overall excellent, but not perfect. Breakfast buffet had decent variety and quality for the size of the resort, but did fall short to some other larger hotels of equal caliber. For lunches and dinner, we had a lot of very fresh and well-prepared local seafood and pastas. A limited menu was available at the lounge chairs while a full lunch was served at La Baia. The food was not standout, but as good as expected for a place of this caliber. They had a good variety of wines including some good local options. Prices of food and drink are higher than local restaurants, but are on par with luxury hotels/resorts elsewhere. Dining staff were very nice and some stood out with some Italian flare to their service (Antonio, Luca). We did see some small things fall through the cracks, but it didn't hamper our overall experience. Looking back at our stay, I would say we were well taken care of by the staff and really enjoyed the resort and its amenities. The view, grounds, and swimming cove are the highlights of this resort for us. The food and room were as expected for a place like this. Service was overall good with the concierge being standout. This is clearly a luxury resort and prices reflect that, but you get what you pay for. Prices do get quite high during the summer months, but I received good value staying in mid-May and booking through Amex FHR. I would definitely come back to Mezzatorre next time I'm back in the part of Italy.

Currently staying at Sorriso Therme in a room in the off site accommodation. It is excellent and we have a massive balcony from which we can see the main hotel and pool area. The breakfast has a great selection of continental and hot food on offer buffet style. All the staff are very helpful and speak English very well. The dinner is 4 courses which you pre order at breakfast time so dinner service is quick and efficient. We used the spa and had the spa area to ourselves which was excellent and made us feel very safe from the threat of Covid. You can hire wonderful toweling gowns for use around the pool and spa. Covid precautions are adhered to but it doesn’t spoil our enjoyment in fact it makes you feel very comfortable and safe. The bus stop is right outside the hotel and you can travel all around the island very easily I have to say reading some of the earlier reviews I can’t understand the complaints people made because our experience had been excellent

An honorable mention to the breakfast served on the terrace, one of the most relaxing and appreciated moments by my family.

Incredible Location, Outstanding Architecture, Very Poor Service

Reviewed By lucapT7790AI

Hotel located in a unique place at Sant'Angelo with an incredible terrace dominating the gulf. Overall, the hotel is splendid, has been renovated with attention to quality and incredible minimalist but outstanding furniture and overall settings. Rooms are very pleasant, facing the sea with nice private terrace, very good setting. Very nice attitude of the lifeguards at the ThermalPark, bravi! For what concern the service and customer experience, it has been quite a disaster. The staff working over there is lacking of coordination and leadership. The majority of them do not welcome the customers saying hello when you meet them (with the exclusion of some of them but very few), the almost do not smile, To reach the thermal park which is very nice you need to take an electric car trolley which is difficult to find available and requires sometimes to go back to the reception to call it. Staff is very limited in capacity so when they are busy doing one task (like serving at the restaurant), the bar is empty with no possibility to have a nice apero on the terrace during evening time (one time we have been suggested to go out and have it oustide...). The restaurant at the thermal park is very good from a food quality perspective. The service is very poor. Staff is moving around without proper coordination and tasks assignments, forgetting bacis attention to caring of the customers (we have orderred 2 times pasta with vongole and nobody has ever taken to us an empty dish for the shells) who are sometimes left alone for long time. Second courses are arriving when dishes for the first one are still on the table. Bar was left alone at 05.30 pm while the thermalpark was still open, standing there for more than 10 minutes without any possibility to interact with someone. Service to go back to the FIVE STAR HOTEL from the Thermal Park still not efficient. The day we had to leave we were booking an eletric trolley for the baggage to go back to the taxi parking. We had to chase 3 times to call them back as we were really coming short of time to reach the port, quite a disaster. Last but not least, a 5 START HOTEL should NOT share the staff with a 4 START HOTEL as the level of service, attention and caring that a 5 STAR HOTEL is supposed to deliver should be completely differnt. COST per Night almost 400 euro/couple, location apart, not worth at all!

Hotel is quaint. A little dated but comfortable and very clean. The room was a family room, bunk beds for the kids and a full/queen for the adults. The spa services are limited due to the ongoing pandemic, understandably. We were offered mani/pedi and massage options. Restaurant has a set menu for dinner and also requires a reservation. Breakfast was very good, buffet style with social distancing measures. We enjoyed our stay.

Spa was top, hotel was flop

There are two different parts to this hotel: first the hotel itself is already quite old and basic and looks like it needs some renovating. The ac was not working so well and it had an old moist smell in the room. Also on the ceiling wet spots were visible. In our room food was not included and we went to the restaurant on the sea and the hotel restaurant. The restaurant down by the sea was making my boyfriend sick. My food was good but it was not worth the price we paid. The hotel restaurant serves a menu every night which was okay. 4 courses for 25 euros. Second part to be considered here is the absolutely cool thermal pools you are able to use for free. You need to bring/buy a bathing cap and the pools are without chlorine with thermal water amd/or ocean water. You have to walk many staircases because it is built on a cliff. This is something to be considered if you want to stay there. Hotel staff was very friendly and with bus lines 1 and 2 you can get easily to port and back up for 1,50 euro within 10 minutes. Taxi is about 15 euros

My husband and I had an especially wonderful 4 days at this charming hotel. We were very happy with our quaint room, balcony and unbelievable views. Breakfast which is included was more than adequate. So delightful to sit outside and linger over one more cappuccino! The dinners were delicious and a chance to try new delicacy’s. Had my first coffee creama at the pool bar. My new Italian favorite drink! We could walk the beach which was only a few steps away. The beautiful sea was so refreshing. We were only a short walk to the shopping restaurant area. Philippo the manager could not have been more accommodating. He secured all of our travel tickets and taxis to and from Ischia. He and his staff truly made us feel like family! I was so sad to have to leave. We can’t wait till we can again visit and stay at Hotel Ambasciatori and the beautiful island of Ischia!

Villa Gilda

Island Adventure

Reviewed By Flyingfarmer29

We visited in the off season, which was very nice as we got to experience everyday life in a small Italian town and not feel like we were in an artificial, touristy destination. We loved being able to walk to restaurants, and the bus service (once we understood it!) was more than sufficient for getting around the island. Even off- season we found plenty to explore, in particular castello Aragonese, and there are several museums as well. Our unit was absolutely immaculate, and everyone at Villa Gilda went out of their way to be helpful, especially Federica, who was warm and personable. Everything in the unit worked perfectly and we were quite comfortable. Not fancy but more than adequate and pleasantly, if simply, decorated. Easy walk to supermarket, greengrocer, pharmacy and bakery. Several resident cats correctly read us as suckers and joined us on the sofa in the evening! We also enjoyed the on-site natural hot spring, which is located in a covered area and is a pleasant way to finish the day. The only downside to Ischia is if you want to explore Naples and the Amalfi coast; it is about 17 euros per person one way every time you take the ferry, and that adds up fast.
