These are two separate museums. The Zonengrenz- Museum is in the middle of Helmstedt and has a very good presentation of the history of the border with its watchtowers, armed guards patrolling, plowed strips, mine fields, dogs, tank traps and concrete walls. These were all meant to keep the people in East Germany from escaping to the West. The Zonal Museum is several kilometers from Helmstedt at Marienborn at the actual former border crossing. This area contains the actual buildings and structures that were used to process everyone and all vehicles desiring to travel into the East zone or thru the East zone to West Berlin. This was the only land crossing of East Germany to Berlin until the reunification of Germany. I was stationed there in 1960 and witnessed the tension in the border area.
