I go often to Shantiniketan and I have stayed at a variety of places. From the absolute basic budget variety (Rs 400/- or USD 8 per night) to the so called 2 or 3 star establishments. This was a delightful surprise find. Don't expect star category facilities. They don't pretend to be one. Instead, the colourful ambience, rustic environment and warm service will delight. Location: Tucked away at the western edge of Prantik Township, off the road that separates Prantik Township and Taltore Village. More or less at the south-east corner of the waterbody which was earlier known as Lahabandh and now forms part of the Shyor Bithi Park and Resort. A Rs 20/- rickshaw ride would get you here in 12/15 mins from Prantik Railway Station. From Bolpur-Shantiniketan Railway Station this would be a Rs 50/- and 30 min rickshaw ride. You can also hire an auto-rickshaw for about Rs 120/- and get here in 10 mins but why would you do that? Half the charm of Shantiniketan is its laid-back slow pace. The major sights of Shantiniketan like Rabindra Bhavan, Kala Bhavan, Chatim Tola, Fair Ground etc are all within 15/20 min by rickshaw. Rooms: The old building has 6 or 8 rooms. Comfortable, spacious, clean and well furnished. The upper floor rooms are bright and sunny. The ground floor should be choice of last resort. The new building on the left hand side (as you enter the premises) of the property has the nicest rooms. The ground floor rooms are good. But the two-room (two double beds, two toilets) suite on the first floor is the best accommodation of the hotel. Apart from the two spacious rooms you have a wide verandah all to yourself with the nicest views. See pictures I have uploaded. We were a group of two couples and two children and the kids had all the space they wanted to romp around. We peak rates of Rs 5000/- per day for the suite. You can bargain and get a good discount outside the peak couple of weeks of Poush Mela, Christmas-New Year and Basanta Utsav. Service: Staff is very helpful and eager to please. Gopal (he is sort of a head-waiter plus man-friday rolled into one) will solve all your problems! Then there is Saha Babu managing the front desk. Ever smiling and ever eager. Room service gets overwhelmed during peak season and could be a tad slow. Some of the staff could perhaps do with a bit of training. But then, if you are a tourist at Shantiniketan you wouldn't be in a hurry, isn't it? Food & Drinks: The food is wholesome Bengali cuisine and reasonable attempts at North Indian cuisine. Price is very reasonable. See picture of the menu I have uploaded. Miscellaneous: Generally they would agree to send a transport to pick you up from the Railway Station (either Prantik or Bolpur-Shantiniketan) and drop you off. They would also arrange rickshaw or car for local sightseeing. If you ask they will arrange for an evening of Baul Songs on extra payment. There's a cute little open air amphitheater. Cons: The only negative I can think of...the colour scheme is rather dramatic! Might hurt your senses a bit...LoL!

Shakuntala Village Resort

A traditional village resort in Shantiniketan. We provide the ultimate taste of bengali and santhali.

Terrible choice to make when you're looking for the perfect kind of getaway amidst nature

Reviewed By deymou2c

I took my family on a two days' trip at Shakuntala Village resort considering the reviews online about the place. Here are the pros and cons of this place. Pros: Always smiling employee who says no to nothing. Wonderful live performance every evening. Cozy bed with warm rooms especially amidst the cold December. The ghee provided specifically from their restaurant was tantalizing to the extent that I bought 1kg on my return day. Food was delicious and appetizing. They send the guest details to the local Toto driver so that they can be received at the railway station and brought to the hotel at an expense of 150 rupees. Cons: No internet service stating the fact that their wifi router has one issues at the new building. No telephone connection to call out for room service, so every time we had to go out and instruct the employee even if it's just a bottle of drinking water. Super deluxe room for 4 person had only two beds placed side by side, leaking flush, no side tables or chairs. No housekeeping for the entire stay. Terrible food service with small restaurant and immense chaos at the hands of untrained professional. Not at all pocket friendly considering the standard of service provided. Provided tea in paper cups at 15 rupees which in Kolkata come at 5 rupees. Disgustingly late restaurant service for which I had to wait for 20mins for the fish to arrive after I was done eating all over items. No special service for the guests and hence they treat outsiders equally letting them all queue up in the restaurant for lunch and harassing the guests.

Best for solo Traveller

Reviewed By vimleshr

I was on tour of Bengal, and planned my reasonable trip. That's why I have choosen this lodge and I paid 500 for one night. Lodge has old furniture and ambience but It does not matter for me. It is walking distance from main temple. They have one restaurant down side and also very reasonable. I paid 100 rs for two times food which was good for me. So I will suggest bachelor or solo traveller.

Shanti in Shantiniketan

Reviewed By SandeepV480

After the cacophony of traffic in Kolkata.. this place Nestled in a small lane of Shantiniketan is peaceful haven for tourists. Especially the unwarranted honking in and the road from Kolkata to Shanti Niketan goes silent here. The bunglow is lovely with 4 old style big rooms and attached bathrooms which are very basic. The neat lawn and garden is something that we miss now back in Kolkata. Further the caretaker Satya is very helpful. His wife an excellent cook who prepares homely food. They prepared lovely shidobaath at our request. Chicken and bhetki fish preparation were excellent. Worth visiting.... The place was built by Ganesh Pyne who is a world renowned painter who unfortunately is not among us anymore. No wonder a lot of artists visit this house for inspiration. We also visited the Amar Kutir for Bengali lunch with mutton. This is in a village very close by in a Jungle.
