The town museum is located in a magnificent merchant’s house built in 1805. The museum is home to southern Norway’s largest exhibition on fish, which shows how techniques and equipment have developed over time in the area. The museum also has its own art collection, including Norway’s largest public collection of works by Amaldus Nielsen, probably the most famous artist from southern Norway. There are also works by other local artists such as Adolph Tidemand, Olaf Isaachsen and Gustav Vigeland. D/S Hestmanden

DS Hestmanden is a sailing monument paying hommage to the Norwegian warsailors. The ship is the only remaining Norwegian vessel from the merchant fleet who provided supplies for the allied forces in both world wars. A hihlight of her career was when she took part in the allied forces' invation of Normandie, the "Operation Overlord" in June 1944. She miraculously avoided all attacks from submarines and bombs and was in active duty for more than 50 years before she was put out of business in 1964. She was built in 1911 and is currently in the final stage of complete restoration after 30 years of work. The museum will open for public in May 2017.

We went to the mill, to see the still working facility, as well as being a museum of the history of cleaning, combing, spinning and weaving Norwegian wool fabrics ! The museum is open for tours 3 times/day in the summertime, but we went there in rainy November, unannounced, just to see if we could take some pictures and maybe visit the gift shop........ After lurking around inside the entrance, we were greeted by a super friendly employee, who works in the mill, as well as gives tours in the summertime ! She was just closing the gift-shop for the day, and volunteered to show us around the facilities! - We were thrilled, my husband is an engineer, and I am a teacher of textile techniques and history, so, we were so thrilled to be able to see the different machines doing all the intricate process tasks for making wool into usable yarn and fabrics ! Our strongest recommendation to visit !!!!!!!!

The childhood home of the artists Gustav and Emanuel Vigeland. Gustav Vigeland is perhaps the more famous of the brothers, having produced the sculptures for the Vigeland Sculpture Park in Oslo. Their childhood home is typical of craftsmen’s houses in “old Mandal”, and a guided tour will give you a unique insight into the childhood and artistic development of the brothers.
