Top 8 Cooking Classes in New Mexico, United States

March 14, 2022 Giuseppe Pratt

With its rich cultural heritage from Native American and Spanish settlers, New Mexico has been both a Spanish colony and a Mexican colony, and still retains a strong individual identity within the United States. The landscape is breathtaking, the food incredible, and there is a thriving cultural scene, all of which makes New Mexico, and Santa Fe in particular, a great place all year long.

Cooking Studio Taos

I am lucky to live in Taos so I take classes at Cooking Studio Taos from time to time. I can't recommend this enough. You cook good food and meet interesting people. Chris is a great teacher. Best of all, we all sit down after all the cooking is done to eat what we have prepared. It is such a congenial experience. Chris and Valerie are great hosts and, may I add, very generous with wine!

Jane Butel Cooking School

Learn to cook Southwestern-style by whipping up some of the greatest salsas, tamales, and blue-corn chiles rellenos this side of Mexico.

It was a pleasure to attend Jane Butel's Perfect Pies class. Each of the six recipes was creative, diverse, and delicious. Jane is truly a professional! Her class included the history of various ingredients, tips regarding measuring, and hints regarding texture, etc. Jane was well prepared and facilitated the class--in her own kitchen--with poise and grace. Thanks to her oversight and high expectations, every pie was a huge success. It was truly a lovely evening! And, I can't wait to replicate the lemon meringue pie that my partner and I made in class.

The School offers a variety of authentic classes and events, including demonstration and hands on cooking classes, restaurant walking tours, and a regional market. Celebrating over 23 years in business!

I was originally skeptical of a demonstration class as I thought I wanted a hands on experience; however, the Southwest Appetizers demonstration class with Chef Michelle Chavez was ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! Chef Mica has a wonderful energy and lots of historical knowledge of the foods and the region. Every bite was delicious and she gave wonderful tips that make all the difference in cooking. Cooking is all about the details and the flavors. This combined with a true teaching chef passionate about her craft made this a marvelous experience. I will return and would recommend it to everyone. Well worth the time and money. A great way to experience Santa Fe!
