Phra Si Ratana Chedi

Reviewed By Erindel66 - Vilanova i la Geltru, Spain

This wonderful golden stupa or chedi belongs to the Emerald Buda Temple in the Royal Palace. Situated on the west end of the upper terrace. Built by Rama IV in the middle of the 19th century- It reminds of the ancient pagodas of Ayutthaya.. The chedi is covered with small gold mirrored tiles, making it a bit shinier than other pagodas that are just painted with gold. It houses a piece of the Buddha's breastbone.

A Thai friend recommended me to visit this place since I was on a hop on hop off boat tour. It's worth it! Unique Chinese architectures and many restaurants and cafes in there including some shops if you feel like picking up somethings as souvenir. A nice calm place which will give you a really nice scene for Instagram for sure. Highly recommended if you want to go somewhere besides the usual tourist traps.

Wat Thong Nopphakhun

What a great place! This temple fetishizes Siamese trade with China via junks - the merchant vessels before the advent of coal-burning steamships. Windows in the ordination hall which look like portholes. Boundary-marker stones housed in white cylinders that evoke lighthouses. A stone ship which doubles as a little cemetery. And murals in the main temple which feature some of the gayest scenes I've ever laid eyes on in a Buddhist house of worship. The white-painted walls of the buildings almost glow in the right kind of light. The angles and ovals and tiers, and the fact that this temple is dedicated not just to the creed but to navigation on the high seas and on the Chao Phraya two centuries and so ago -- lovely and fascinating.
