Clare Heritage & Genealogy Centre

Reviewed By browjan - Fort Mill, United States

In October of 2018, I visited Clare Heritage Center and had an appointment with Antoinette O’Bryen. I was interested in finding more information on my Lahiff roots from County Clare. I had done some research and basically was seeking confirmation and expansion on what I thought I already knew. She explained that they have a back log of interested clients and if I was willing to wait she would be willing to do more research. We agreed, and to be honest the waiting part was the hardest for me! I am thankful for each and every patient response Antoinette extended to my often pestering inquiries for updates or status of their research on my family. At times I worried that perhaps I would never learn more, but I was rewarded in December of 2019 with a packet containing a very thorough (more than 50 page) report. I was able to confirm much of my own research and was most happy to also receive expanded information and insights. She helped identify the locations of where my great great grandfather lived as a “herd” in the Barron. She reasoned through many documents and substantiated her conclusions and gave me all the paperwork, so I can follow up on much of it. I look forward to returning in Fall of 2020 with 8 to 10 of the Lahiff descendants. At this time the info will be shared with them and Antoinette will give our group a lecture about our family and the Famine period. She is asking a very fair compensation for doing this and we all eagerly await her informative talk. We plan to visit many of the spots she highlighted in the report and walk where grandfather John and Eliza walked. I wish to thank Antoinette and her staff for their excellent research and give my high endorsement and recommendation of their work. I encourage you to be patient as you await the research. It is worth the wait. I would also encourage you to ask for updates at the 3 or 4 month interval for your own peace of mind and to touch base with their team. You will be receiving a “thesis type” bound report filled with excellent insights and documentation. Consider ordering more than one copy to share with your family. I highly recommend!

The Burren National Park

The Burren National Park is a place of great natural beauty. There are various marked trails in the Park that take you through many fascinating and beautiful habitats, such as calcareous grasslands, woodlands and limestone pavement. Entry is free, and a free bus service is available from May-August. Free guided walks may also be arranged during the summer - contact Information Point for details.

This was one of my most enjoyable days walking. Lough Avalla Farm walk is just beside the Burren national park. It is privately owned. The walk is superbly signposted along the whole way. It takes one through a unique and varied landscape where little grows naturally except hazel bushes and a bewildering array of wild flowers. A bit of heaven on earth. Bring strong shoes.
