Every time I travel to Trieste I like to visit the "locanda Mario" restaurant. The place is quite old fashioned but meals are excellent and well prepared. The specialty are snails (I have tried both bouguignonne and omelette) and frogs, but, depending on the period of the year, it is possible to find the typical dishes of this part of Italy, which are influenced by both the Austrian and Slovenian tradition. FIrst courses are tasty (home made pasta) and meat main courses are excellent. Ask the waiter/owner for the best wine to combine with dishes. During the summer dog days this is an amazing place to eat outside (there are always 3-5 degrees C less than in Trieste!).

Great welcome, friendly staff, , chat about the fish, the menu the wine.....Our starter was fish risotto, modified as some of our group couldnât eat shellfish , but sensational all the same.Next course was freshly cooked sea bream! Firm flesh, good simple taste. But so full by now. Deserts some said excellent, all very enjoyable.

Hiden within narrow streets of Muggia center Splendor is providing family atmosphere and probably is family owned and family managed. Menu is not big however enough to enjoy lunch after short walk or visiting mearby clothes outlet. We've eaten fish and other seafood, then chocolate muss for desert. White wine as house wine was OK too.

While visiting the Cathedral S. Giusto, we asked the person tending the gift shop for a lunch recommendation. Upon arrival, a glance along the street left us dubious. Inside, however, the meal and the friendly service were great. Seek it out if you are hungry for seafood and in the vicinity!

We found the Antica Trattoria Suban via TripAdvisor and what a find this was! They offer about 15 dishes but they are all immaculately made and perfectly representative of the local cuisine. Prices are more than OK for what is on offer (expect to pay about 15 Euro for a second course, 6 Euro for desert, a bottle of great wine is about 20). Food is magnificent, well prepared and well balanced. And the deserts are to die for...try the ice cream! Service was absolutely great, very knowledgeable and courteous, with complimentary dishes from the house. The restaurant itself is a bit outside the city centre but you can easily find free parking spaces outside. Reserve in advance - the place tends to get full! Respect for what the founder of this restaurant has done! A very highly recommended establishment!
