Nordhausen is a city in Thuringia, Germany. It is the capital of the Nordhausen district and the urban centre of northern Thuringia and the southern Harz region; its population is 42,000. Nordhausen is located approximately 60 km (37 miles) N of Erfurt, 80 km (50 miles) W of Halle, 85 km (53 miles) S of Braunschweig and 60 km (37 miles) E of Göttingen.

Die erste schriftliche Erwähnung vom Bau eines Nordhäuser Rathauses stammt aus dem Jahr 1360. Die einst offenen Arkaden wurden zunächst als Kaufmagazine genutzt. Heute ist der von 1608 bis 1610 errichtete Renaissancebau der Herren Siegfried Krämer, Hermann von Werther und Ludwig Burner auf dem Markt zu sehen; sie wahrten den typischen Charakter eines traditionellen Handels- und Verwaltungsgebäudes. Der offene Arkadengang wurde erst 1883 mit Fernstern versehen. Bei der Bombardierung der Stadt 1945 brannten weite Teile des Rathauses aus. Schon im Jahr 1952 konnte der Wiederaufbau des historischen Rathauses beendet werden. Ein Glockenturm mit gotischer Tür, fünf Arkadenfenster und das Nordhäuser Wappen prägen das eindrucksvolle Gebäude.

“Dora” was founded in the summer of 1943 as a subcamp of Buchenwald concentration camp when the rocket production activities carried out at Peenemünde were relocated to tunnel facilities near Nordhausen to protect them from air attacks. Between 1943 and 1945, some 60,000 persons from nearly all the countries of Europe, above all the Soviet Union, Poland and France, were deported to the Harz Mountains as concentration camp inmates to perform forced labour for the German armament industry. One in three of them died. Today Mittelbau-Dora is a place of learning and commemoration. Changing exhibitions inspire critical examination of the past.

The concentration camp was located near Nordhausen, Thuringia, from the end of August 1943 to the end of the Second World War. It was founded as a sub camp of Buchenwald as rocket production was relocated from Peenemünde after Allied airstrikes. The V1 and V2 production in the Harz area was mainly done by forced labour in tunnels and under horrible conditions. After the unification of Germany much work has been done to establish the present memorial and a new museum building. Much work has been done to describe the sufferings of camp prisoners, and a special exhibition about a number of survivors and their lives after the war.

Der Nordhäuser Riese, auch bekannt als "Riese von Nordhausen", ist ein 2,30 Meter hohes Holzstandbild am Lutherplatz und ein Wahrzeichen von Nordhausen. Das Bildnis wurde am 22.August 2010 aufgestellt. Die erste Original-Figur war bis zum Stadtbrand am 23. August 1710 am Riesenhaus angebracht, die zweite Figur stand dort bis zur Bombardierung von Nordhausen im April 1945. Von 1957 bis 1961 war der Riese Bestandteil der Rolandgruppe.
