We drove to the summit of Foia to appreciate the views which were stunning. It was very windy there that day so I was a bit wary of going to near the edge.

Several picnic tables and well water make this a wonderful spot for a picnic. You get incredible views from here. You can see how fire spread through the region a few years ago but the purple heather has filled in for great pictures.

Caldas de Monchique is a nice hiking spot in the hills, with mineral and thermal waters. Still, there are visible remains of the wildfire, reminding us to care for nature and what we have. If you are close take soem time and visit this beautiful place.

Have never seen a Church without a cross over the altar, it has a statue of Mary instead It a lovely church inside, with a number of small chapels around. It is well worth a visit but the town is very hilly and there is a steep hill up to the church.

Convento de Nossa Senhora do Desterro

Have walked up here many times over the years. Go up the stairs in Monchique and follow the signs, basically you keep going up. You can see the monastery when you drive into Monchique beside the yellow house. The walk up is about 20 minutes and is a good workout. The cobble stone road ends and you then follow the path through the cork trees to the monastery. As you arrive at the monastery it will say Keep out private property but keep walking through the wire gate to the next door. If that is open the men living there will invite you in to see the ruins. If you have seen the movie the English Patient the scene where the soldier is nursed could have been filmed here. A few tiles are left on the wall and some stations of the cross as well. A photographers paradise! The book Wild Portugal lists this as one of the top sights in the area. After leaving you can buy a few lemons or scented oils but we always leave a few euros as a thank you. There is no admission fee. Then we walk through the gardens, orange and avocado trees for great views of Monchique. Really one of the most interesting places you could visit.
