Castle Of San Giovanni

Reviewed By tdenten - Chicago, United States

We had an incredible hike up to the Castle of San Giovanni on the first morning of our trip, and it was just what we needed to beat our jet lag! The hike took us about 2 hours up (it was VERY hot and we stopped a million times for photos). The way down only took about 50 minutes. So I would say 3 hours is on the long side if you are trying to plan your time. You would be remiss to go all the way to Kotor and not do this!

Kanli Kula Fortress

One of the most beautiful summer stages in Montenegro, it is a venue of music, film and theatre festivals, which made Herceg Novi widely known. It used to carry the name Bloody Tower, during the time when Novi was occupied by the Ottomans. One part of the tower - the tank - served as a prison.

Kanli Kula (Bloody Tower) was the second fortress we visited as part of our visit to Herceg Novi. Another fortress with a lot of history, it originates from the Turkish period (16th century). The climb upto the fortress is well worth it, the views of the Adriatic are just amazing. You need good footwear to get there. It has been reconstructed and turned into a summer stage and can accommodate over 1500 people.

Hike through the old mountain roads

We will meet in front of shopping center "Kamelija" and walk to the old road that was the only connection between old Montenegro and Boka bay. Then we will hike to the old mountain village called "Spiljari".We will meet local people who still live there and you will have a chance to try unique homemade cheese, ham and rakija. Then we'll climb to the fortress "San Giovanni" and enjoy the view.
