The famous round tower that stands in the middle of this ancient little town is of typically Irish design and, whereas 60 such towers still survive in Ireland today, only three such towers are known outside Ireland. Two are in Scotland at Abernethy and Brechin, and one is at Peel on the Isle of Man. The Abernethy Tower dates probably from the 9th or 10th century, with 11th century alterations. It is 72 feet high and only 8 feet in interior diameter, with walls 3 1/2 feet thick. Its bell dates from 1782 and its clock from 1868. It isn’t known how Abernethy got its round tower, but over the years it has found use as a bell tower and as a secure place for local people and their possessions in times of danger. It still functions as a bell tower today. At the base of the tower, just outside the churchyard gates, is a splendid example of a Pictish symbol stone that was found elsewhere in the village and placed here under a coping stone intended to protect it from rain flowing down the side of the tower. It probably dates back to some time around 600 AD and the symbols apparently depict a hammer and anvil, separated by a ‘tuning fork’, a crescent and V-rod. The exact meaning of the symbols isn’t known.
