Travelling from Porto to the South across Serra da Estrela was a good decision. Plenty of nice views. Many attractions on the way (water reservoirs, RAMSAR protected area, charming glacier valley, ski area etc.). More on the pictures.

The building of Guarda Cathedral was ordered during the reign of King John I, at the initiative of D. Vasco, Bishop of Lamego. Construction works began in 1390 but would only be completed in 1540, during the reign of King John III. Therefor the Cathedral became one of the most emblematic in Portugal with a structure which creates a symbiosis between Gothic and Manueline styles. The granite building stands out because of its fortified shape with its pinnacles and counterforts intercepting refined Manueline decorative elements. Inside, you should not miss the chance to contemplate the magnificent main retable made in ançã stone, a work carried out by João de Ruão’s workshop in Coimbra and a great example of ancient sculpture during the Late Renaissance period. I went there in the morning to take some photos, beautiful place with clear and clean water. Went past later in the afternoon, and very full. No surprise as it was extremely hot. Next time I will try to go for a swim.

Castelo Rodrigo is truly a step back in time. The steep cobblestone paths , ancient walls, and cultures of three religions all meld into this historical village. Walk into the shops. Hand crafted items ,from Local Portuguese craftsmen are offered... handmade toys, cork products, beautiful sweaters, scarves and baby cloths! Try the delicious almonds... and purchase an assortment! Also olive oils, hand made soaps and balms. Have a coffee. Enjoy the non touristy feel of this exceptional village. Be warned! The streets are ancient stones! Wear comfortable ,lug sole shoes. Have a sweater, or jacket as the top of the village gets windy! Walk through the ruins imaging the past inhabitants and their daily life!

It was our first trail in Manteigas. The brochure said it was a medium level difficulty. The first bits were way trickier than what I'd expected! But it was fine, and our 7-year old daughter was delighted with all the climbing involved. The trail was extremely well marked, and the views of the cascades and the waterfall, as well as the surrounding woods were simply delicious.

A beautiful place to have a look all around the mountain and a long walk with the fresh air of the mountain. Besides all this, you still can find traditional gastronomy in small shops.
