Top 6 Resorts in Syracuse, Italy

April 27, 2023 Kaleigh Reichenbach

Once one of ancient Greece’s most important cities, today Syracuse (Siracusa in Italian) is a lively town of about 125,000 on Sicily’s southeast coast. The city overflows with amazing remnants from its long history. Romans, Vandals and Normans are but a few of those who ruled here after the Greeks. In Syracuse’s harbor, Ortygia Island (also called Città Vecchia or Old City) is the site of many of the main attractions, including the seventh-century cathedral and the Fountain of Arethusa.

Its recent restoration maintains the original structure made of three buildings, contributing to its dynamic layout. Rooms are furnished differently with antique furniture, four-poster beds and refined interior decoration with distinctive Sicilian touches and Mediterranean features such as colorful bathrooms tiles.

Repeat visit just as good as the first

This was our second stay here. We had a very fine stay here 3 years ago, before covid, and were delighted to return. While absolutely everything was fine, I wish to mention especially the breakfast and the coffee. Both were the best we had during our trip in Sicily.

Lovely but room for improvement - 3½ stars rating

We booked this as a family holiday through TUI and some of the photos - especially of the pool area and gym - are incorrect/ misleading. The pool areas are lovely though, but the photos aren't correct (there's no island in the middle of the pool for example). Also - the restaurant photos are taken of the paid restaurant, not the basic buffet restaurant which is where you go if you're all inclusive, as we were. I wouldn't rate it more than a 3. We did think most of the food was lovely though - very fresh and particularly italian - considering the huge amount of guests they had to cater for, it was very well run kitchen and staff were very helpful around the dining areas! You did have to get there close to opening times to get all the good food though, we went late one lunch and there was alot that wasn't available. Most of the staff were lovely and friendly although most can't speak much english so just be aware of that if you're only english speaking. We did try some basic italian greetings etc but not very successfully! One of the staff around the pool was particularly grumpy and quite rude to alot of guests - and couldn't speak any english at all but would come over to us and tell us off (we didn't realise as soon as we finished any drinks that we had to go and throw our plastic cups away straight away - sometimes we hadn't even finished them and he was over telling us off) - he got very stressed if anyone tried to move sunbeds together (bigger families etc) Don't take your gym gear, the gym was truly awful - run down, old equipment and some of it didn't work (the one treadmill they had didn't work!) - also only opens at 10am - pointless if you want a workout before breakfast! Rooms were basic and clean with good airconditioning and cleaned daily.

Why isn’t every hotel like this?

This is how it should be done: the hotel and room was spotlessly clean, there was a stunning view from the room, and best of all were the most friendly and helpful staff I’ve met in any hotel I’ve ever stayed in.

Depends what you’re looking for

The Pros: the hotel is beautifully situated in the countryside about 25 minutes from Ortigia, with a decent golf course on the site. It’s perfect for a little golf getaway. If you want to get away from it all and be in peaceful surroundings, and you want to play or practice your golf, this is a good choice. There are good putting and chipping areas and a range just steps from the main building of the hotel Note: This is not the hotel for you if you want to walk into town or try a lot of different local foods, as the location is a bit isolated and the food offerings are quite limited. The Cons (and feedback): I was hoping to have a golf and fitness holiday but disappointingly the gym was not open due to Covid (a fact that was not disclosed to me at the time of booking). They charge 5 star prices and put themselves out to be a 5 star resort but the quality and service falls a bit short on multiple fronts: 1. Food menu is limited and the quality of the food is very average for the price (I had a dinner and a lunch there and it was fine dining portions with fishy swordfish and bland lamb) 2. Breakfast buffet is ok but not the amazing feast that others have reported - while most five star hotels around the world are cooking eggs to order and making local specialty products available, the hot food consisted of bacon, eggs, and roasted veggies that were precooked in batches and kept in warmers. The bread and pastries were nothing special. I would have hoped at least for some nice local spreads and jams and maybe higher quality cheese and charcuterie than what was on offer 3. Staff are a mixed bag - the guy manning the golf shop is great as is the head waiter at breakfast (who was obviously training up and giving instructions to his staff) was very welcoming, spoke English well and was helpful, but it seemed like half of the staff were still trainees that did not serve with confidence. I was also given incorrect information - i asked 3 times about the gym and I got 3 different answers -1) no, sorry there is no gym. 2) After I double checked the website and saw that they advertise a gym, I asked again and was told that there’s an outdoor area to the left of the pool with weights (there wasn’t one) 3) after asking again about the outdoor area with weights I was told it is closed due to the winter and the indoor gym closed due to covid. It’s obvious that more staff training is required. Most of the staff were polite, but apart from one or two people service was generally stiff. Also I don’t think guests should see the staff gathered around having a social chat off to the side in the middle of breakfast or dinner - it gave the place an air of a family farm (which it is not) rather than an upscale resort with professional staff. The hotel seems to cater to a mostly Italian clientele but it also seemed that many of the staff didn’t speak much English which was a bit surprising since everywhere else in Sicily it’s not been a problem. Despite this being built on the grounds of a former monastery there was no historical context provided - it would have been nice to have some signage or short explanations written so we can better understand the history and background of the site (which is beautiful). I had a great stay but this place could have been so much better if I had access to a nice gym and more food options - I would have spent more time on the premises if I didn’t feel compelled to drive into town for meals

Lovely hotel on an agricultural farm. Basic but clean with amazing pool, great breakfasts and free bikes to go 1 km to a beautiful beach Aranella. The breakfast was served in a beautiful garden every morning - nice selection - most of it made directly from local farm.

Place is right next to the sandy public beach but we always found space. Everyday our sunbeds and towels (at no extra charge )were there waiting for us.even private parking is free if charge. There is a lovely small garden where one can relax or make use if the hot tub. All in all a wonderful excellent stay and we hope that Covid permitting we will be back in September. Thank you all
