Historic Huguenot Street

At our 10-acre National Historic Landmark District, visitors experience over 300 years of history across seven historic stone-house museums, a reconstructed 1717 French Church, the Huguenot community’s original burying ground, and a replica Esopus Munsee wigwam. Period rooms and exhibits tell the stories of a French Huguenot settlement as it evolved over time, and also reveal the history of the area’s Native and enslaved African peoples and Dutch settlers.Historic Huguenot Street has grown into an innovative museum, chartered as an educational corporation by the University of the State of New York, that is dedicated to protecting our historic buildings, conserving an important collection of artifacts and manuscripts, and promoting the stories of the Huguenot Street families, from the sixteenth century to today.

Thomas Cole National Historic Site

Thomas Cole (1801-1848) founded the Hudson River School as one of America's premier landscape painters. Cedar Grove, his home in the historic Catskill region, was named a National Historic Site in 1999 and is open to the public today. Visitors can tour the grounds, see rotating exhibitions of Hudson River School art, and learn about the life of Thomas Cole.

I’ve been to Olana many times across the Hudson River, but never to Cole’s house. Very rewarding — you really feel the family and what Cole was trying to do in landscapes and ecology. Highly recommend the guided tour, very enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides. All the main rooms are open and contain interactive elements as well as period pieces. Several buildings are included , with the old studio now a modern museum- quality gallery with exhibitions that broaden your understanding of the importance of the Hudson River School of Painting for not only being the first real American art but also helping Americans appreciate and preserve their own scenery and environment.

Senate House State Historic Site

Built in 1676, the Senate House reflects the Dutch way of life that characterized Kingston in the 18th century. More importantly, it was the meeting place for the original New York State Senate after the Revolutionary War. History was made here as colonists shaped a newly created government. There is a collection of colonial-era artifacts, furniture, and a portrait gallery featuring the works of the famous colonial artist, John Vanderlyn. The Senate House State Historic site is comprised of 3 buildings: the 1676 Senate House, the Senate House Museum & Gallery, and the Loughran House (which houses staff offices and is open for special events only). The property welcomes individuals, families, school groups, scout troops and group bus tours. The site offers special educational programs for school field trips and home school groups. Check the website for special events listings.

After driving by it for 40 years, I finally stopped and checked it out. The tour was an excellent history lesson given by a guide in period costume about what was the third largest city in the state of New York at the time. The museum also gave you a perspective of the area during the birth of our nation. I would highly recommend visiting the site if you are in the area. While there, you are also within walking distance of many fine restaurants and shops in uptown Kingston.
