Heading out along Nutbrook trail from Straws bridge on our new years day walk it was freezing and the path was very icy and slippy, most people we met where walking on the edge or grass all the way to the canal, beautiful crisp day for a walk.

I had never heard of the Bennerley Viaduct until I saw Tim Dunn's tv programme about railway architecture. After a google search I was able to find it. Driving along the A6096 from Ilkeston there is a turning on the left for the kennels. There is a very small area to park. If you walk along the river you can see the viaduct through the bushes. Walk a little further an the bushes have been cleared and there is an information plate giving some history about the viaduct. I look forward to coming back when you can travel across it.

I decided to have spend a couple of hours looking round alvaston lake while my wife was at a meeting in Derby.I had a cup of coffee in the cafe there and spent an hour watching the model boat club sailing there radio controlled boats of all different models.I then spotted an angler[im one myself] so i decided to watch him for an hour.he managed to land several carp in that time so i had a very enjoyable morning and will try it again soon.

A great trail and fab views and generally on the flat, park at Hadfield and cycle or walk the whole length to the Woodhead tunnels. Tip go early and not at the weekend to avoid the crowds.

What a joy to be out again and discover somewhere close to home that I never knew existed. Searching the Canal Trust website for ideas, I came across this stretch of the Chesterfield canal which has more than just a towpath along a canal. Park on the road in Shireoaks then walk away from the marina towards Turnerwood and beyond. Although there were other people around walking and on bikes, it was peaceful. There are plenty of seats along the way, so take a packed lunch - there's even a sandwich shop at the start. Plenty of locks to look at but birdlife was surprisingly sparse. Saw plenty of butterflies and a few dragonflies.
