The shrines and temples of Kyoto offer a rare link between modern life in the city and its very ancient past. The Shimogamo Shrine dates to the 6th century and seems suspended in time, its serenity and spiritual power still palpable. Visit Fushimi Inari Shrine, then see the life-sized Thousand Armed Kannon statues of Sanjūsangen-dō. Enjoy traditional geisha performances, then savor a tranquil meal at a restaurant overlooking the Kamo River.

Having walked 10-20k a day for two weeks Exploring Japan I was seriously hurting and after some googling came across Hiyoshido which had great reviews and was pretty central in the Gion district. I had to reserve an appointment and come back a day later as they were all booked up, but boy was it worth the wait. The massage pyjamas provided, the mats, the serenity of the place and a wonderfully sweet therapist who checked in regularly made for the best experience. A combination of stretching, more traditional massage, realigning, clicking etc. Worked an absolute treat! I really came out feeling like a new woman and it was good value for money too at 5,000 yen for a full hour. Like I say, I cannot recommend enough if you find yourself in need of a massage in Kyoto. Hands down best I’ve had, and I’ve had many!
