Not a "4 star" hotel but a great getaway for a relaxed and leisurely holiday
Reviewed By shaun2985I stayed here in September 2011 for my cousin's wedding which was in Calabria. Our family took over about 8 bedrooms and visited out of season and we essentially had the place to ourselves. It was fantastic - whilst the facilities are basic, the location and the service are perfect. You don't get any of the 4* trimmings of wifi, rainshowers, slippers to wear around or anything else but you get clean rooms and bathrooms, a generally pleasant lobby and porch area, attentive staff, lovely food in the restaurant, and a great swimming pool. The hotel has a family-friendly atmosphere as well, being run by a family. If you want a relaxed and leisurely retreat to Southern Italy, this is definitely a place to stay. I look forward to visiting again.

A great family destination in northern Calabria
Reviewed By RomanreviewerMy wife, my 2 yrs old daughter and I spent a weekend in early September at HDS. The structure is located inside a sizable green area at the outskirts of Sangineto, right in front of the sea. Paola train station is 25 min away,while Lamezia international airport is about 1h drive from the hotel. The neighbourhood is extremely quiet and the hotel has a private, two sided gravel beach with all usual amenities and a large swimming pool right behind it. The structure dates back to the 1960s, and would benefit from a general renovation, but it is extremely well maintained, having a sort of "vintage" flavour (the swimming pool seemed new, though). The rooms are distributed among five two story buildings that are well inserted in the landscape (from the sea, the backdrop of the Calabrian mountains is nice). Our room was a 3 bed, private bath, spacious but not large. Everything was very clean and in line with the hotel ranking (four stars). Just the TV was very small, but we didn't care as we weren't there to spend our nights in front of it. WiFi was available in the common areas. The personnel was nice and forthcoming, trying always to accommodate our needs with a smile. The hotel owners live on premises during the season and are always there for you. Meals are served in a large dining hall by the pool, always buffet-style, with a good choice of quality dishes in all-you-can eat servings. A bar serves sandwiches and lighter fare right on the poolside. The entertainment team was engaging and funny, and I personally enjoyed their performances, even though one should not expect luxury cruise level shows. I noticed that during the day they were running a wide range of sports and fitness activities, including the usual sailing, kayaking, swimming classes and also exercise groups targeted at senior guests. Despite not having enrolled in the mini club for the weekend, my daughter had a great time and still has fond memories of the time spent at HDS - by the way a kids playground exists on premises. Last but not least, all this comes at almost budget prices, making HDS a great value-for-money choice.
