Top 5 Budget-friendly Things to do in Suncheon, Jeollanam-do

September 21, 2021 Darleen Reid

Suncheon (Korean pronunciation: [sun.tɕʰʌn]) (Suncheon-si) is a city in South Jeolla Province, South Korea. It is a scenic agricultural and industrial city of around 250,000 people near Suncheon Bay. It is located in the southeastern corner of Jeollanam-do, just over an hour south-east of Gwangju. Forty minutes south of Suncheon is the port city of Yeosu, and twenty minutes to the east of Suncheon is Gwangyang. It is currently experiencing strong development due to being included as part of the Gwangyang Bay Free Economic Zone, one of three newly created Free Economic Zones (FEZs) in South Korea due to open within the next decade. As of October 14, 2007 plans are being set up and a referendum is being planned for a merging of the cities of Yeosu, Suncheon and Gwangyang into a new metropolitan city, taking advantage of the Gwangyang Bay Free Economic Zone, Yeosu's Expo 2012 bid and port facilities, Suncheon's educational institutes and Gwangyang's POSCO plant.

We weren"t quite sure beforehand whether we should take the detour through Suncheon while travelling from Seoul to Busan, but were so glad we did it. The park is beautiful and well maintained. We went for sunset and enjoyed great views. Not sure what it's like on weekends, but we went on a thursday and it was not crowded at all. Great place for photography too.

Nagan Eupseong Folk Village

It was a long taxi ride away from the city center (Suncheon Station), especially as the roads were frozen. However, the view was worth the ride! It was a very quaint and quiet little village, perhaps we reached too early (we reached at about 9:30am!), perhaps the weather was too cold, there were hardly anyone around. Shops were closed and there were no performances, but it was so lovely to be walking around the place. It gives off a completely different vibe from the bustling streets of the city. I absolutely loved the place!

This is a garden park in Suncheon Bay. Must-visit course in Suncheon Travel. I highly recommend. - Locating upper area of Suncheon Bay, it's about 15~20 min by bus from Suncheon Station. - At the ticket office, 2-day pass for 6 attractions of Suncheon is available. Or buy ticket for Suncheon Bay Garden. Seniors with 65+ are free. - There are amazing cone-shaped hills, tile bridge, parades, global gardens, flamingo pond, bicycle boats, Metasequoia Road, etc. - With a massive area, spending at least 3 hours is recommend. - Near the west gate, there's Eco Trans Station for Sky Cube connecting to Suncheon Bay Wetland Reserve. - Suncheon Local Foods Direct Market is locating in southeast area. It's a fine place to purchase fresh local products.

Suncheon Open Film Set

This is a drama set implementing Suncheon of 1960s and Seoul of 1970s. It's really fun to experience old times and watching reactions of old visitors. - There are slum town on the hill, photo studio, movie theater, pubs, carpenter's shop, comics shop, etc. - School costume rental as the first visit is recommended. - Slum town is to climb up risky a bit. Seniors over 70s need to be careful. - Entrance is just 3,000 won. Seniors with 65+ are free. Other attractions aren't inclusive. But, watching around without them is okay. - Dancing seniors in the disco house are fun. - Took bus #77 to reach from Suncheon Station. And 15~20 min walk after getting off the bus. There were frequent signs and it's easy to find direction.
