It was a challenge and it is technical, slippery and dangerous- BUT AMAZING! If you are not use to scrambling or climbing, then this would be a difficult challenge for you. It is steep, but I think that is the least of your worries, as it is very rocky and slippery. It is good that the guides emphasise this, because I can imagine a lot of people would underestimate the technicalities of this trek. However, the challenge for us was so much fun, we took a relaxed pace for us climbing up and made a careful descent. We left camp at 6:30am, got to the top where the majestic pinnacles were at 10:30am, ate lunch there and left at 11:30am. We then got back to camp at 3pm. Generally I think it takes larger groups a couple hours longer, it was only 2 of us with our guide. We did have to pay more for only having the 2 of us, but there were no other people to join with and we were the only ones up on the top. Worth paying the extra- it was like a private tour!! This was such a highlight of my year! The trek, the magical view and natural wonder at the top and the challenge! I would definitely do it again! Oh and swimming in the beautiful river at the end of our hike was such a highlight! We slept very well that night back at Camp 5! Thanks to Peter our awesome guide!!

The park is very well organized with accommodation; an info center; activities (like the canopy and night walks), guides; well maintained paths; clean toilets snd a well stocked shop with bug spray, rain ponchos, etc. A highlight is the 45 minute walk to and from Lang and Deer Caves and the caves themselves. Both are beautiful. It’s now rainy season and it poured at dusk so there were no bats, but the experience was incredible just the same. Given that it’s low season I was able to walk back to the park HQ by myself. Magical. Note that even if you fo see the bats, you won’t be able to get the famous picture of the “Abraham Lincoln” looking rock face of the cliff staring at the bats. That was taken by a photographer dangling from inside the roof of the cave for hours, rather than from the outside of the cave bay viewing area.

The Clearwater Cave river system is one of the longest in the world measuring some 220 kms & still counting. It is a must go when you are visiting the Mulu National Park. If you are adventurous enough, do take a swim in the river outside the cave. There is the picnic platform with changing rooms beside it.

We did this walk with a small group of about 6 and a guide. It is said to be the longest walk of its type at just under 500 metres. Fascinating being in the rainforest canopy. Although we did not see much wildlife, just a few birds and squirrels, it was a great experience. Highly recommended. If you are planning on visiting Mulu National Park it is worth booking tours in advance, especially the caves, as there are limited places.
