Top 4 French food in Kigali, Kigali Province, Rwanda

December 26, 2019 Misti Hsu

Find out what French restaurants to try in Kigali. Inhabited since the 11th-century, what is now Kigali has been the home of Twas, Tutsis and Hutus. The city sits on a series of verdant ridges and lush valleys, and has a Muslim Quarter and a bustling market. Rwanda's capital is the site of battles that left over a million, mostly Tutsi and moderate Hutus, dead. Kigali Memorial Centre is a permanent memorial to 1994's Genocide, built on a mass grave where 250,000 are buried. Kigali City Tour Bus offers an excellent introduction to this now safe, friendly city.

Situated in what seemed a quiet upmarket location, the restaurant is on the upper floor of a small building. This is not an elegant restaurant but the food was great quality although portions were not generous. The restaurant was full but service was still attentive and prompt.

I'm struggling to write this review, as although the staff were incredibly well intentioned and friendly, everything about this hotel was utterly useless. Our check in was relatively chaotic, the receptionist insisted he escorted us individually to our rooms, which although was a nice thought there were 7 of us, so it took ages. I had one of the garden rooms, the walk to the room was nice, but the room itself was incredibly basic. The wardrobes and bed resembled more a victorian care home than a hotel room, the bathroom was verging on unpleasant, peculiar lighting throughout the room and all in all felt unwelcoming. Staff were, as I said, very friendly but terribly slow. The service was non existent when you needed something, but invasive when you didn't. Wifi was poor and relatively confusing, about 9 different passwords & routers, which were just 3G mobile tethers and were broken more often than not. Honestly, the food was pretty hit and miss; admittedly as a vegetarian I voluntarily limited the menu for myself, but over the 4 nights I stayed I can't say I left feeling satisfied with a single meal I had there. Service once again was incredibly slow, and one evening it took well over an hour for our food to arrive. Most of all, I must confess I was shocked to find how expensive this hotel was, as I had been invited I didn't book or pay for my accommodation, but when I arrived we needed to arrange another room and was required to pay $300 per night, which I honestly thought was shocking and can't think of any way of justifying their extortionate prices.
