Kroonstad (Afrikaans for "Crown City") is the third-largest city in the Free State (after Bloemfontein and Welkom) and lies two hours drive from Gauteng. Maokeng is an area within Kroonstad, and is occasionally used as a synonym of the city itself. It is the second-largest commercial and urban centre in the Northern Free State (after Welkom), and an important railway junction on the main line from Cape Town to Johannesburg. Maokeng is Sesotho and means "place of the thorn trees (mimosa trees)".

Experience country hospitality with the Kruger family at their aptly named diner. We were a party of 10 and had a great timeFood was great and the whole Kruger family did their best to make our visit a memorable one. Homemade burgers and steaks are the main fare - you can taste the personal touch!Not licensed, so remember to take own alcoholic beverages.

What a find in Kroonstad! Every dish we had were beautifully presented and deliciously prepared. My partner ordered the wild mushroom pasta which proved an excellent choice. I ordered the lamb loin chops (called cutlets on the menu) with vegetables. Although there seemed to be only one waiter on duty, the service was good and friendly. A restaurant to be recommended!
