Top 10 Yoga & Pilates in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

June 16, 2021 Alice Mieles

The north Indian city of Varanasi, or Benares, is regarded as sacred by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. Situated in the fertile Ganga valley and on the banks of the Ganges, Varanasi is a place of pilgrimage for Hindus, who come to bathe in the holy river. Known as the City of Temples and a beacon of culture, Varanasi has produced many renowned writers. It’s also a center of silk weaving, so practice haggling at the chaotic bazaar for some beautiful souvenirs. Rickshaws are the best way to get about.

I spent a few weeks in Varanasi with a university program and came upon Dr. Mukta Tripathi and the clinic she runs with her husband. The clinic, Shreenivas Ayurvedic Centre, became a second home for me during my time there. I spent many afternoons getting massages, both the rose and the dry plant massage, with Soni that helped me get over a pretty bad virus I was experiencing. Those massages, combined with the steam box (svedana), truly aided my recovery. I worked with Dr. Mukta to learn about ayurvedic practices-- we covered so much information, beginning with a deeper understanding of the doshas that I hadn't learned in any other Ayurvedic courses. We spent hours going through our own doshas, learning about the balance of energies in the universe, and how that flow is captured within us. Dr. Mukta also prescribed me various medicines to help with some of my wild, running thoughts as well as my sluggish digestive system. They are working really well so far. In general, I think that if you're interested in Ayurvedic medicine, in massage, and in learning about these techniques that have been used for thousands of years, this is the best place to go and learn. They also have a clinic where they do 28-day cleansings/healings (panchakarma) for a fraction of the cost of what this usually is in the States. I recommend them with all my heart!
