If you like primates, and animals in general, you cannot miss a visit to Japan Monkey Centre! They have so many species of primates and you can observe them very closely, especially Bolivian squirrel monkeys and ring-tailed lemurs, since visitors are allowed to enter in their large enclosures and walk around freely. There is also a museum part, a kids zoo, which is great for children as they can safely pet animals, and picnic areas are distributed around the zoo. The staff is very friendly and sometimes zookeepers give short talks (in Japanese) at their section to tell visitors some facts about the animals. When planning your visit, I suggest checking the website and social media, as they often organize events, during which you have the opportunity to prepare food for the primates, for example. I definitely recommend a visit to Japan Monkey Centre!

The flexibility to chose locations that suited our wants and abilities was great. Hiro San was very quick to put together an itinerary that accommodated a family with a stroller-baby (no monkey park due to long unpacked walking paths). Taking in the beautiful temples and view of the Kyoto from the west was breath taking and the guide was able to explain many things we as new Japanese learners could not read or know through cultural knowledge. Overall a great experience, a wonderful and lively guide, and some great memories.
