Theatre Romain (Antique)

Roman theater which seats 13,000.

We had a greatly enjoyable cruise on the river Rhone with Riviera Travel (30th May - 6th June 2019). We had to climb a steep hill to the Roman amphitheatre. The view was panoramic from the top but it was quite a climb to the highest seats and it was even more difficult to climb back down. My wife had to cling to the fencing and jump down from seat to seat as the steps were so steep. The theatre was built in the first century AD and was one of the largest in the ancient Roman world with a capacity of 11,000 spectators – remarkable.

Cathedrale Saint-Maurice

We went in after lunch one day and were almost the only people there except for someone singing. The acoustics were astonishing, of course, and we had to just sit and listen. This is a contemplative and beautiful Gothic church.

It is well worth the climb up to Mont Pipet, past a huge graveyard, where you will arrive at a great view (and a public washroom) and a tiny church with a fascinating story. The story of the church centres around two children and the Virgin Mary, I believe. It's quite beautiful up there. You can see the whole of Vienne and there are endless photo opportunities.
