Le Bistrot de Jean-Baptiste

Reviewed By Scousetripper - Merseyside

Popular and busy, especially at weekends, so booking is essential at this gem of a bistrot. Located in a quiet back street in the centre of Vienne, the outside appearance belies the quality of service and cuisine. Tables are available outside but the inside arrangement of tables in front of a fireplace and on a mezzanine is more convivial. The main room is easily accessible for disabled clients.
Menus are available at €15.50 (except Sundays), €25 & €35 as is à la carte. Our €25/head family meal began with aperitifs at café prices and an amuse bouche of a delicate melon and ginger gaspacho; our entrées included curry flavoured rillettes of mackerel and new potatoes stuffed with snails and served with a Mesclun salad. Both were perfectly prepared and the snail stuffed potatoes were a delightful discovery. Mains included rosemary flavoured hake with a tomato couli served with artichokes and glazed onions or herb encrusted duck breast with a port jus and vegetables. Again, both were cooked to perfection!! The only slight disappointment was that the cheese selection, which attracted a €2.50 supplement, came as three local cheeses served on a plate rather than giving the diners the option of a choice from a cheeseboard. Having said that, the cheeses were spot on. Alternatively, fromage blanc was also available.
The desserts, Crème Brûlée aux Noix, Caramel fondant or a selection of home-made ice creams and sorbets rounded of the meal ideally.
The wines, mainly locally sourced, were of excellent quality and reasonably priced.
I visit Vienne a lot and wonder why this is the first time I've been here - I'll certainly be back soon. If in Vienne on a Saturday, do visit the large street market in the morning and wind up here for lunch - leave the Roman antiquities for the afternoon, they'll still be there!!!

My saumon en papillote was tasteless, the accompanying vegetables were cold and my wife's chicken dish was so unmemorable that we have forgotten what it was called!
We have had many enjoyable meals in France, but this definitely was not one of them!
In addition, the restaurant had no 'atmosphere' and the service left something to be desired.

L'espace PH 3
La Pyramide Hotel, Vienne

This is my third review on all La Pyramide related services.
I already reviewed the hotel itself, were restaurants are located, plus 2 Michelin stars rated Patrick Henriroux's fine restaurant.
Firstly I need to say that our stayed at the hotel was a wonderful one; we found it to be a modernist artwork of Architecture, technical details and decoration...one of the very best that myself, as professional architect, had seen lately !
Secondly, we always remembered our fantastic evening-dinner at Henriroux's Michelin starred restaurant and its creative, well executed recipes.
Most of the times I don't review places based on having just breakfast, but in order to had a full overview of La Pyramide- as a Place- I decided to write a short review note regarding our breakfast at this one, the less "formal" restaurant there.
"L'espace PH 3" (PH after Patrick Henriroux ?) restaurant, as it should be in a Hotel place, is the "less formal" option to their fine restaurant.
The moment we entered the hotel reception we notice, right next to it, the beautiful setting and decoration of this restaurant; Modern style, but beautiful and comfy greenish-yellowish colored chairs makes all decoration-needed.
The full views to their splendid, well manicured french style garden, makes even more agreeable the place. I noticed a nice glass roofing detail which, together with that all-glass windows, makes it even more "interesting" !
China and silverware are as nice as they can be for a place that, even looking like a Bistrot, qualifies better than that with its nice option of that Terraced Gardens outside sitting...as weather permit.
Their service seems to be friendly and nice ( as it is in the whole place), but that morning; they had a slow-service- moment.
As breakfast we had their 25 € offered menu. It was nice, but nothing to rave about it and a little bit expensive for a "standard" breakfast dishes. As Hotelier I would recommend them to have- as well- a nicer and simple, but more varied, buffet style breakfast, regardless its highs standards pretentious offer...they need to reinvent it ASAP, for their own good and their success, not only as nice restaurants, but as a Boutique Hotel. We understand those kink-of operational problems as we own one in the Caribbean !
I can not judge their lunch options as we didn't had neither saw it, but as an overall place I confidently recommend it, not as one of the finest places in the Rhône...but the nicest one while visiting it Vineyards.

Warm welcome and nice decor
The starters were good (although the rillette de truite was under seasoned)
The fish on the two main courses were cooked very well ("saumon" and "bar") but the accompanying vegetables were a real let down. The carrot was only distinguishable as a carrot because of its colour. It had NO flavour at all. The same could be said for the squeaky green beans, the over boiled artichoke and the microwave-reheated roast potato. Truly terrible and a real shame as the sauces and fish were both great.
Following the main, the cheese plate consisted of 4 slices of cheese of varying strengths. I have bought nicer cheese in the Vienne market at the weekend. They were ok, but in a French restaurant I don't think 'ok' cheese is enough.
The moelleux au chocolat for dessert was very nice and the raspberry coulis gave a fresh, sharp contrast to the sweet chocolate.
I won't be returning as I feel there are much better options in Vienne

The clue's in the name: this is a great place for meat-lovers. We all went for a fixed-price menu option but there is a huge list of a la carte meat dishes. The 3 of us all had different starters & mains and everything was extremely good. You order one vegetable as a side dish but they are big enough for 2 or 3 to share. Desserts good too. Service was good & the owner very welcoming. We'd booked ahead meaning we had one of the outside tables, though inside looked pretty nice anyway (loved the wine-glass "lampshades")
