January 3, 2018 Jeremy Dunfee

Let the beautiful coastal town of Varkala melt your worries and tensions away. Varkala’s peaceful seaside cliffs adjoin the Arabian Sea, setting the scene for several water spouts and wellness spas. The waters lapping at Papanasam beach are considered to have holy, sin-cleansing properties, and the nearby Ayurveda treatment center will cleanse what the ocean missed.

Varkala Cliff

Nice view of the ocean and beach along the cliff. A very touristy strip full of shops selling the same things and restaurants selling overpriced food from around the world to varying degrees of quality. Certainly not an Indian cultural experience along here, but if you've just come to relax and enjoy the scenery and Beaches it's not to bad.

Love this beach, beautiful sand and crashing waves overlooked by the dramatic cliffs. Really nice at sunset when more crowds gather, especially on weekends. Otherwise lots of local lads walking around gawking at the inappropriately dressed Westerners

The Kappil lake near Varkala is a perfect place to spend a day or evening and the awesome beauty of the lake and surroundings and the serene atmosphere will definetely relieve the tensions and relax our mind and body. Kids too will have a good time when we go for boating in the calm lake. The view from the bridge itself is mindblowing and to explore more we can venture into a boating. Last time we visited Kappil Lake it was not very crowded and we spend almost four hours there. The Lake merges to the Arabian sea and even when we travel by train we can see the lake and surroundings.

Varkala Light House

Reviewed By Sanil M - Pune, India

You should ideally hire a 2 wheeler for 1 day to visit all the places near Varkala. And this lighthouse must be on that list. It is only open for 2 hours every evening (I think between 1530-1730) so plan accordingly.
It's about 200 steps till the top but the views are breathtaking. You have to remove your footwear at the bottom as it's a working lighthouse and must be kept clean. All you have is 10 mins on top so enjoy every minute!
