L'Atelier le Thiers

-Our medieval city of Auvergne is the capital of the French cutlery since more than seven (six) hundred years. -The LE THIERS® knife that you are going to mount with our animators INSERFAC is the culmination of this know-how. (Knowledge) -It was created and deposited in 1994 by the confrerie du couteau LE THIERS®. -Your knife mounted, we invite you to go to the tourist office and the museum of cutlery to -deepen your knowledge.

Thiers is the capital of cutlery. Everywhere you turn there is a shop selling a huge range. This workshop is something different. You get the chance to make your own knife (children can make a butter knife) in just over an hour. Two people work with one craftsman who guides you through every step. Some steps are complicated and he completes those. But at the end you feel you've really achieved something. It is well worth 25 euros (8 euros for the butter knife for children) Highly recommended.
You can just pop in and watch for no charge.

Thought this was going to be dull and geeky but it was really interesting. Demonstrations of how knives were made, excellent explanation of the processes and a real feel for the people who worked in this skilled yet incredibly hard industry. Some beautiful pieces to look at in the museum and then a wander round the town of Thiers which, despite being a tired and shabby in places, is absolutely gorgeous with more fabulous buildings than you can shake a stick at. You WILL want to buy a knife, even if it's just a little pen knife for cutting your cheese on those long drives through France!

Vallee des Rouets

You can explore this factory-lined "valley" on foot or get eloquent glimpses from the road. The road is lined with abandoned once-proud old mills, ateliers, auberges, and old houses. Trees grow inside the crumbling brick-walled factories, and out their windows. Makes you wonder what people of the future will think of our industrial architecture.
