Mission San Miguel Arcangel

This mission was founded among the Salinas Indians, who inhabited the area in the 1700's.

Reviewed By JohnInItaly - Santa Cruz, California

I have visited most all of the California missions, including into Baja California (that was the same area of Mexico as Alto California in the late 1700's). Mission San Miguel Arcangel is exceptional for the original configuration, because it has always been in use, and only repaired over time, instead of rebuilt from ruins or replicated (like Santa Cruz). Surrounding lands give you a feel as to how it existed in the original period. Located right along Highway 101, instead of far away, like Mission San Antonio.

Graveyard Vineyards

Rob & Paula, bonded as a winery in '04, started with 184 cases of estate wine in '07. "We started out offering wine tastings on the front porch of our house & if the weather was bad we'd invite guests in the kitchen & drink the wine", according to Paula. After their boys were done with 4H projects, they tore down the barn & built the winery. Up the hill from the 150 yr. Old graveyard, you'll find our cozy barn style tasting room which bodes a grand fireplace & outdoor seating area with spectacular views! Rob still has his "day job" & you'll find Paula at the tasting room. From the 1st year, our wines have received Platinum, 4 STAR Gold, Gold, Chairman's Awards & many 90+ scores. Our winemaker, Jason Bushong has consistently produced crowd pleasing wines. Because of that we have grown by word of mouth & still continue to do so now. Our Skeleton Key Wine Club is growing quickly & we do many fun events for the club members & general public. Come "Drink in Peace" with us!

Tucked into the north eastern corner of PR wine country it's name is taken from the 19th century Pleasant Valley graveyard located at the winery's entrance. The concept is resplendently featured in wine naming, labeling and a host of merchandise (including a fun, coffin shaped wine box). But that's the extent of the tie. I was hoping there was a story that the vines are established on the former burial ground; that the grapes draw 'nutrients' from below. Alas not.

It is always nice to leave a tasting with new knowledge that extends beyond the winery itself. So it was discovering tannat. With origins in Europe as more of a blending grape Graveyard has a limited release of the grape as a recently approved (2005 BATFE certified) varietal. Tannat has been sown more expansively in PR and Santa Cruz that anywhere else in the US. More encounters seem inevitable.

Graveyard wines are good but what's more distinctive is the marketing. It's a creative way to stand-out from competitors in what is an already crowded field (couldn't resist). Perhaps the winery can expand and make a new bloc from the adjacent plot. Then it will truly be a wine that lives up to its name.

Estrella Warbird Air Museum

Estrella Warbirds Museum is dedicated to the restoration and preservation of military aircraft, vehicles and memorabilia of those who flew and worked in the military aviation field. Our approach, however, is not to glorify conflict but rather to make a future generation aware of the fact our way of life does not come without sacrifice. Founded over 25 years ago by two men with two airplanes and a strong desire to see an aviation museum in Paso Robles, California, little did they realize how far and how rapidly their initial dream would carry them. Today, located on over 13 acres of land, situated on the Paso Robles Municipal Airport grounds, the Estrella Warbirds Museum is one of the fastest growing non-profit museum on the west coast. The museum has become an intregral part of the Paso Robles community attracting visitors from around the world.

The museum is a fun stop for the whole family, with an unexpectedly large collection that you can "Get up close and personal" to. Great for aviation and automobile buffs, including the kids.

Villa San Juliette Winery

Reviewed By ataraxis

Villa San-Juliette is a boutique, celebrity owned winery that is nestled away off the beaten path on cross canyons road. We really enjoyed our tasting as VSJ has a lot of unique wine from grapes that are not well known. Their wines are low to mid-priced. Most of the wines are in the $18-$25 range. We liked the Grenache, the Rose, and the Petite Sirah.

We convinced a family member who lives in the area to sign up for their wine club. All of our tasting fees were waived and they also discounted the food we had with our tasting. They have a small menu of food and pairings you can purchase, including pizza. As a wine club member you get discounts on everything. Even merchandise. They also throw big parties on their wine club pick up day including live entertainment, wine, and food (at no cost to members). We got the sense that the staff there really love their jobs and enjoy working there.

I rate VSJ 5 “circles”. They have a great assortment of reasonably priced wines and the staff are knowledgeable, fun, and obviously love their jobs. Also, the surrounding views are wonderful.

We found that by visiting central coast wineries during the “winter” we had a non-rushed experience and many wineries went off the tasting list and let us explore what we wanted. In some cases, we were the only ones there. I recommend avoiding Saturdays at the most popular wineries. Even during the off season southern Californians migrate up on the weekends to the central coast region. Please keep in mind that although it is not expected at all, feel free to tip your wine pourers/attendants/wine educators if you feel they have gone above and beyond what you expected and made you feel at home at their winery. There is an art to this and we have experienced some bad executions of it, so rewarding the excellent experiences, even if you didn’t care for the wine, I think is right thing to do.

If you have any interest in military history starting with WWII, you will love this place. Well curated, well staffed, and the collection is very good. The annex with the vehicles is also a must see. You need to show ID, car registration and insurance to get a temporary pass to get on the base; but the guard at the gate will direct you to where you need to go to get one.

Eberle Winery

In 1973, Gary Eberle began his career in the wine industry by heading his family's Estrella River Winery (currently 360 Degrees in Paso Robles) and produced 500,000 cases a year at its facility. Eberle's pioneering spirit didn't stop there. In 1980, he co-founded the Paso Robles Appellation and in 1983, Gary opened the doors to his own Eberle Winery with the premiere of Eberle's 1979 Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, Eberle handcrafts 25,000 cases of wine each year from surrounding Estate vineyards. And, after more than 33 years since the release of the Eberle label, the winery consistently remains one of the highest award-winning wineries in the United States. The German name "Eberle" translates to "small boar." At Eberle Winery, a bronze boar greets every guest who visits the Tasting Room. The statue is the 93rd replica of the original bronze Porcellino cast by Tacca in 1620. And today, the original can be found in the straw market in Florence, Italy. It is considered good luck to rub the boar's nose and toss a coin in the water below. Guest enjoy complimentary wine tasting and cave tours daily. Reservations for VIP Tour & Tasting, groups of 8 or more guests or reserve tastings please contact in advance.

Seems like this winery/vineyard has its act together! Beautiful vineyard, friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff with very good wines. We ended up with their Reserve Cab, Chardonnay and Syrah, but the rest of the wines on their tasting flight are pretty good too - did I say the tasting is free? Good marketing but beyond just marketing, the staff seems genuinely passionate about what they do and about the wine industry around Paso. They freely gave out recommendations/shout outs to their "competitors" and shared their knowledge of the area. I guess when one is confident of one's own product, it shows. In particular, shout out to Justin, a knowledgeable young lady who is very passionate about wine making, and the wine industry... and the good life! Thanks for the recommendations on where to visit/have meals etc... great recommendations!

The cave tour is interesting too - it happens every half hour I think, or when there is a large enough group of folks... nice to walk through the area to get a sense of what they do...short but interesting. Along the way we passed by a small alcove with a table being set up for a VIP wine and cheese pairing - apparently, wine club members get to book the special VIP sitting, where one is treated to wine and cheese with pairings, something that non members have to pay (I think) $35 for. Another good deal!

Being welcomed by the 2 beautiful poodles is also a bonus! Beautiful dogs! I think their grooming cost more than my haircut (and they have better "barbers" too!)

Four Sisters Ranch Vineyards & Winery

Four Sisters Ranch Vineyards and Winery, located in the northern Paso Robles AVA, have been family-owned and operated since 1989. For many years, we focused on growing quality grapes in Paso Robles and then finally opened our own tasting room, winery, and event center in the Spring of 2015! We are thrilled to expand our operation to this breathtaking hilltop location, surrounded by hundreds of vineyard acres and hills. It's the perfect spot to relax, take in the sunset, and sip and savor our award-winning wines. We hope to see you soon! We focus on hand-crafted, limited-edition varietals and blends in our tasting room. From award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel, Merlot, and Malbec, to our Méthode Champenoise California Sparkling Wines and new limited-release blends including Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo, and Grenache! To allow you to better enjoy our gorgeous picnic areas and expansive views, we also have a number of food items for sale, including fresh cheeses, local salami, nuts, crackers, and other snack items, including non-alcoholic beverages. Stop by and stay a while! Touring & Tasting Magazine just named us one of the "MOST SCENIC SETTINGS" in Paso Robles - and we couldn't agree more, but then again we are pretty biased!

We had been here before when this was Silver Horse Winery. I found the new wines comparable to the old brand. They have some nice wines, a little different than the same varietals in the area. The owners were there and we had a nice visit. It is worth a stop to give it a try.

We did both a wine blending and a wine club appreciation party last week. This small Vineyard holds a special place in our heart. Leon and Cindy Tackitt are great hosts and fun to spend time with. The wine is consistently excellent, my favorites are the Cab and Zins.

The tasting room is a little out of the way, but worth the drive (then visit Graveyard and Ranchita Canyon- both in the area.)

If you want to have a fun tasting with good wine without any crowds you will be wowed with this small vineyard.
