Mt. Britton Lookout Tower

Beautiful hike that’s not to be missed! Definitely moderate- the hike is quite steep and at an incline the whole way up. That said, it’s paved! Accordingly, it’s really not too tough. The map says this path is 45 min to the top; as a couple of 20-ish year olds moving at a good clip, we summited in 25 minutes. Great views and good tropical rainforest environment throughout the hike. The summit tower provides breathtaking views of three coastlines, plus the rainforest mountain ridges. It’s a great value for the effort. Some quick bullets/logistics: - We arrived at 1:55pm in March 2020 and completed the trail at 2:18pm. - There are no bathrooms or trash cans along the route. There are a couple of covered benches here and there. - Parking is somewhat limited - much of it roadside. - No wildlife but great rainforest foliage. - The cobblestone paving is single file. Be prepared to make way for other hikers. - We were able to hike the whole way in flip flops and birkenstocks- but I imagine tennis would be more comfortable.

We travelled with a couple that wanted to stop in at the Caribbean Trading Company on the way to visit El Yunque rain forest. The store has a huge variety of products (visit their website!) and I guarantee you won't leave without something flavorful and spicy. I have since reordered from them, and I received my order in just a few short days!

El Yunque National Forest

This forest receives an annual fluvial precipitation of almost 400 billion liters of precipitation. Its waterfalls, orchids, giant ferns, imposing tabonuco trees and palms make it a true paradise for the photographer and nature lover. Right next to the highway number 191, there is the La Coca waterfall and an observation tower with a gift shop and reminders. Get a map and choose from dozens of trails classified by degree of difficulty, up to El Toro, a 10-kilometer-long path that ascends to the highest point in the forest, at about 327 meters.

El Yunque is an indescribably beautiful rain forest spanning 29,000 biologically diverse acres in Northeast Puerto Rico. Outside the entrance of El Yunque is a small town offering many food and souvenir options. El Yunque offers many natural sites for visitors to immerse themselves in its beautiful trees. El Yunque is home to hundreds of unique plants and animals in a jungle-like environment. There are hiking trails ranging in difficulty, observation points, a natural pool, Yokahu and Mt.Britton Towers, waterfalls, picnic areas, and even a rainforest-themed restaurant. You could spend an entire day or two exploring El Yunque Rainforest, so making a plan is important to hitting all your stops. Also, this might be obvious, but this is a rainforest so be ready for short and long rain showers that are common within El Yunque. We decided to attempt the difficult El Yunque trail starting near the top of the road within the rainforest. This trail took 2 hours each way and was pretty difficult at times. As someone who has very limited hiking experience, this was a challenging trail, but still doable. The trail takes you to magnificent views (pictured below), through streams, and past some inviting rest stops positioned in scenic areas. The top of the El Yunque trail offers breathtaking views over the rainforest and down all the way to the ocean. Vistors like to say they are "in the clouds" when they reach the top of the trail because the peak is so high you are actually inside clouds! Also at the top of the trail is an Observation Tower that looks to be an old Catholic site with its engraved and painted crosses throughout the structure. If you are up for the challenge, the El Yunque trail was one of the highlights of my trip.
