Sanabria Lake Natural Park

Reviewed By Ray V - Chaves, Portugal

Sanabria lake is packed with tourists in the summer especially on weekends and holidays when the temperature goes up on the plains below. The setting is spectacular with forested banks and high Mountains rising in the distance. In recent years it has improved a lot with parking--always a problem--being organized so that everyone has a chance to visit. To get a place at the best swimming beach it is essential to arrive early. A drive north to the new village of Ribadelago and the ruins of the old one destroyed when a dam in the Mountains burst on 9 January 1959, killing 144 inhabitants.

Up on high ridge is the historic center. The castle protected its people in a geographically secure site. No one could sneak up on this castle with its majestic views. The homes from the 1500s were mostly well cared for with bright geraniums hanging from the front.

The premises are wonderful! A two-hour visit not to get bored! Very interesting content and our guide was very friendly, and informative. The wolf together with the culture it built up are very clearly exposed and explained. There are no solid packs there though but they do a wonderful job!

Colegiata de Santa Maria

Reviewed By WelshToro - Birmingham, United Kingdom

Go to Toro. If you don't have your own transport it can be reached by public transport from Zamora or Valladolid. The wine is superb as is this incredible Romanesque church. It sits on top of the town of Toro looking down over the meandering Duero river. Castile and Leon are not short of fantastic Romanesque monuments. The city of Zamora is stuffed with them but Toro's Colegiata de Santa Maria is one of the best. It's a classic Romanesque design and it packs some size as well.
You enter the church from the north side through a highly ornamented doorway depicting Christ surrounded by the twenty four elders. Like many of the churches and cathedrals in the regions of Zamora and Salamanca you will find that the state of preservation at at Toro is quite remarkable and considered one of the best Romanesque examples in the region. Walking through the Colegiate you will exit through the Portico de la Majestad (Porch of the Majesty). This is possibly the highlight of the visit. A beautiful sculptured archway depicting the Last Judgment. It is in sensationally fine condition and all the sculptures retain their original colour.
The Sacristy has some paintings, one of which is considerably superior to the others. A fine Flemish piece known as The Virgin of the Fly depicting the Virgin with a tiny fly on her knee. We now know that the fly was added at a later date.
My parents in law come from Valladolid just down the road and have a knowledge second to none with regards to the historical treasures of Castile-Leon. This is certainly one of them. The wine of the region is exceptional too. Don't miss it.

La Iglesia de Santa Maria Magdalena

Reviewed By madamedefarge - Derby, United Kingdom

This is one of many Romanesque churches in Zamora and visiting them is a very pleasant way to pass the time. This one has a good rose window and some good Romanesque carvings. The entrance door has good carvings around it and these are worth taking a closer look at as you go in.
One of the best things about these churches is their simplicity and quiet dignity, not the normal Baroque extravagances you see elsewhere in Spain. They are invariably free to enter and are one of the best things about visiting Zamora.

Mirador del Duero

Reviewed By ELear - Ancona, Italy

Just behind the Colegiata de Santa Maria, Toro has a famous 'mirador' with a stupendously romantic view over the Duero river stretching away into the distance. As I stood there, it struck me that King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella also probably stood about here before the Battle of Toro in 1476. Not to be missed.

Castillo de Los Condes de Benavente

Reviewed By Redfred1000 - Greater London, United Kingdom

One of the many wonderful things about Spain is the blatant disregard for safety in this generally cosseted world. The castle sits atop this lovely medieval hilltop town with views across the countryside and some good displays on its history, albeit only in Spanish. There is even some medieval armour that adults and larger children can try on. But clearly the client, contractor and safety inspector were all out to a long lunch whilst the safety railings were installed; the bars are carefully spaced so that even quite a large child of five or six could easily tumble throgh them to an early death on the paving below. Ditto some of the turret openings are low enough, if said child can slip the parental grip, to make a leap for eternity. We took our two year old round, and were glad to return from the parapets with the family still intact. Like I say, great little castle, with an enticing sense of danger still present...

The Cathedral has outstanding renaissance frescoes and paintings, and the 16-17th century tapestries are absolutely gorgeous, in perfect condition in vivid colours, and beautiful detail. I went to the Cathedral twice (I was allowed to go twice with the same ticket) as we arrived at 7.15pm and didnt get to see eveything as they start to lock things up at 7.40 and they dont give out the audiosets after 7pm. Also it is not free entry on bank holiday Sundays. It is small but fascinating.

Plaza Mayor de Zamora

Reviewed By NomadicTraveller7 - Fuerteventura

Having been to almost 40 cities, town and villages in a month long trip through Spain, Zamora’s Plaza Mayor rates as only average. There are many much more beautiful, magnificent and spectacular Plaza Mayors in Spain. In fact one of the other Plazas in Zamora, quite close by, is much more attractive.
