We visited by making advanced Reservations through a local guide, who in turn, secured open hours and entrance Reservations for us (check ahead due to limited opening, and note that they close to visitors during rain for safety reasons). We wanted to visit due to having ancestral connections to the Chiaramonte family of the castle. It was a difficult climb up and back down again on rocky, uneven paths and steps, made worse (slippery) due to the rain that started on the way back down. This is not a trek for anyone with a disability or for small children. Wear superb walking shoes for safety, The castle was well-preserved, with interesting history, and spectacular views. A highlight of our travels!

The construction is solid built of rough hewn stone in simple planimetry, which has a rectangular shape to the nave and characterized by a corner tower in the style of an apse.
The Abbey began life as a fortified farmhouse, and its rustic no-nonsense, no airs and graces build remains although transformed in 1092 into a place of worship for the evangelization of Muslims as the Norman invasion took hold and the Arab settlers were brought into alignment with the 'will of Christendom' though religious freedom held under the reign of Roger II.
The interior is very simple with some wonderful late fourteenth Century frescoes, of the ascended Christ giving his Blessing on the congregation as they enter the Abbey Church. There is a large stone font, a crucifix which is dated from the fifteenth century, with frescoes including the study of St. Augustine and the Mass of St. Gregory. There is plenty of parking but you do need a car to access this. Whilst here drop next door to the Archaeological Museum which is also a treat - and very under-visited. Two absolute gems in one.

Baroque churches are legion across Sicily - yet all have a distint flavour - this church is NOT over florid, though the fine artistry and skill of those who were employed to undertake the sculptures, the marble and porphyry insets are extremely high end in their Delivery. Take a while to sit down and look up! ceilings are always a delight - and the Cattefrale has been well cared for over the years

What a beautiful place! You would never expect an Observatory and Planetarium in this small village, which makes it even more special. Davide was an excellent guide, I remember everything he said about the planets, the stars and the universe.
We watched the sunset over the hills, then saw Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and the star Vega. We then went and watched a movie about the moon. The fee is not even worth mentioning. This is a fantastic experience for everyone!

I did not know about the history of the miners in Caltanissetta and it was highly interesting to hear their story. Davide was a fantastic guide, he put everything in a historic context. The first one to tell the story of the miners was actually a british woman who married someone from Montedoro.
Davide really brought the life of this community in the 19th and 20th century to life. It was chilling, interesting and absolutely worth it.
Surrounding the museum is a beautiful sculpture garden, with a view on the village of Montedoro. After the tour you get to go into the entrance of a mine and see a tunnel.

The museum was reasonably interesting but we probably only spent about half an hour there. None of the explanations/leaflets were in English, the staff on the day, didn't speak much English and displays are very traditional. However there are a lot of red and black vases and lots of coins.

We stayed at the Regaleali Winery for 2 nights. The room was beautiful as were the views from the property. Fabiola was a fantastic hostess, from the aperitifs with appetizers, to the wine pairings with dinner to the delicious breakfasts in the morning. Corrado gave an excellent wine tasting lesson and really educated us about wines from Sicily. A fantastic place to spend a relaxing few days!! Everyone there was incredibly hospitable.
