Bel'Mangrov

Reviewed By NYCBelleTraveler - New York City

OMG….wow!!! This is definitely one of our best memories in Guadeloupe. You get to cycle (velib de mer) on the ocean through mangrove. The guide knows everything about all local animals and the mangrove forest and he will happily share his knowledge with you. He will make an open-fire BBQ at the beach at lunch time with Ti Punch, Planteur and Fruit Juices as Apero. The meal was amazing!! You start around 8:30am and will be back by 6pm. I thought I would get bored at some point but not at all. What a beautiful experience: amazing nature views, cycling through a mangrove forest, bird-watching at sunset, BBQ at the beach, sun, warm water, nice people and smiles….and the friendliest, funniest guide ever!!

Excellent outing, a good way to escape busy Guadeloupe and see something completely different, perfect for kids as well, even better if you know French. Plants, weird animals, you will get to hold a sea cucumber that attacks you with a water jet... Beware that the kayaks are open so you will need a lot of sun cream or even better long sun pants to protect you from the rays.

Memorial Acte

Reviewed By 124C41NewEngland - New England

The stunning new Memorial ACTe (opened in June 2015) is a "must see" for any visits to Guadeloupe. It tells the story of slavery and oppression throughout the Americas and makes effective use of audio visual presentations. Designed by a local Guadeloupe architectural firm, construction too seven years and cost nearly $74 million. Some sections, as you would expect, are more effective than others. In particular the area on pirates lacks depth. There are also some minor issues with the audio guide. But all in all, a stunning site. There is also an upscale gift shop and two restaurants. The more upscale is a great choice for lunch. The upper walkway behind the façade is simply amazing. The location was a blighted area that at one time was the location of a sugar mill. The government has an ambitious goal to make this area the new town center of Pointe à Pitre. This is a great start!

Cathedrale Saint Pierre Saint Paul

Reviewed By BroLucius - Winchester, England

There is little of interest near the cruise terminal of Pointe-a-Pitre. It is a poor part of town with run-down streets and buildings. Hoping for the best, we made our way to the Cathedral, which was visible from the cruise ship. The exterior had been freshly painted but did not look particularly cathedral-like. The interior had plenty of iron on display - a necessity after previous destruction caused by an earthquake. This might of interest to a construction engineer, but is not at all inspiring in the way that most cathedrals are. Having enjoyed the stained glass windows in Fort-de-France Cathedral in Martinique, I was slightly disappointed by the lack of such splendour here.

While the museum on the Guadeloupe Nobel Laureate in Literature is closed on Sundays, go anyway to admire and photograph the outside of this beautiful colonial home. This was the mansion of one of the owners of the Pointe-a-Pitre sugar refinery which once stood on the grounds of the present-day Memorial ACTe Slavery Museum.

Reviewed By belleretraite - Montreal, Canada

Pointe -a -Pitre was a port of call on our Trans Atlantic cruise with the Horizon of CDF in 2015 and with the Costa Mediterranea in 2013 . Unfortunately we stopped there both times on a Sunday morning when most boutiques , restaurants and bars are closed .
The Market was opened though and local products were on display ! The choice is limited and the general ambiance is not very welcoming but this may be associated with the frequent rain showers we encountered that morning !
On the good side there are a couple of restaurants at the end of the market where you can get FREE WIFI if you buy something . In fact they serve delicious sandwiches there !
From there , one could walk to the main church and witness a service on Sunday morning which is a nice experience specially at the end when worshippers come out and walk toward the market !
