The scuba diving trip was really fun. The only bad thing is that the visibility was not great, the temperature of the water was really cold, and there was no coral life. There wasn't much sea life either which was disappointing, but we did see a shark, eel and some more cool fish. I would definitely go back because Andy made the trip really fun. Thanks Andy!

Brenda at the info center was outstanding. She helped me plan the perfect vacation for our group of 8. She clued me into renting the best villa ever - overlooking the Pacific with plenty of room - and caretakers to look after us. She organized the best tours for zip lining, sunset/snorkel cruise, and gave me invaluable info on everything there is to do in the Samara-Carrillo area (and beyond!) She was quick to respond, and very accommodating, even setting up a ride to the airport for my brother. Our villa was in a remote area, but Brenda got us the tour pick-ups with no problems. I am so thankful to Brenda for all her expert advise. Our vacation would not have been half as wonderful without her help. I can't wait for our next visit to your beautiful country. Thank you for everything!!!

The Ara Project

In remote, jungle covered hills on the Pacific coast, The Ara Project, a conservation NGO dedicated to the survival of Costa Rica's two macaw species is working to breed and release young birds into areas where they once flew free. Guests can book tours at our Punta Islita centre where they have the opportunity to view released Scarlet macaws in the wild. They will hear about the work The Ara Project does and why it is so important. Tours run for an hour and aim to inform guests of the project's work, the plight of these birds in the wild and what we can all do to help them.

We visited here from the nearby hotel It is well worth the $20 entrance fee. we saw several macaws and when in flight they are stunning , with their red , blue and yellow colours. The lady giving the info talk is very knowledgeable and clearly loves her job.

I was in Playa Carillo staying at La Posada. On Tuesday and Thursdays at 4:30 Kelly was giving yoga classes there on the beautiful Terrace. Nothing like doing a bit of yoga watching a beautiful sunset. Kelly is a very good teacher with a relatively strenuous 1.5 hour class (I went into baby pose at least once per class). If you are skilled at yoga she will really push you. I'm kind of a forever beginner and she helped with a couple of very helpful adjustments. However this isn't pure power yoga. She starts with breathing exercises and ends with a very graceful flow that leaves you stretched, wonderfully tired, and peaceful. I highly recommend her classes.

We really enjoyed this beautiful beach in Costa Rica. But please be careful there. It happens very often that people get robbed or somebody break into your car - like it happens to us. They stole shoes and other stuff from our car. But anyway I can really recommend the place. Just watch your stuff!

Donde Javi Tours
Booking a tour with Javi is the smartest decision you can make if you want the personal attention small group touring offers.
Javi is incredibly personable, speaks very good English so is easy to communicate with and is very responsive through Facebook or email.
He books no more than four to five people per tour so he can provide the most personal attention possible. He can also book larger groups with advanced notice so he can arrange an assistant tour guide to accompany him.
Javi Tours is a family run business from one of the original families of Samara and knows the area better than most. Occasionally his brother or cousin will fill and I've read the service is just as great as Javi's.
We chose Javi precisely because he is a small local business with deep ties to the community. He was really easy to communicate with through Facebook and email during the planning stages. His prices were the cheapest of all the other tour operators we researched but he provided personal service that was worth twice the price!! Absolutely no regrets and will definitely book again if we go back.
Photos: Javi took lots of action photos with his GoPro and emailed them to us within two days as part of the tour price. There were no extra charges. Every other tour operator we checked out charged extra to take photos.
Booked the Isla Chora kayak tour and he picked us up on the beach in front of our hotel. He had all the equipment ready to go well before the meeting time. Javi quickly and thoroughly explained all the equipment and proper techniques and had us out on the water in no time.
Javi did a awesome job of pointing out colorful fish, rock eels, spiny starfish and other wildlife. He provided cold water and fresh pineapple once we got to the island.
We had such a great time with him that we booked a beach tour and sight seeing trip with the next day.

From now on, when I visualize a beach in paradise, this will be it. Absolutely stunning. Wide, spacious and palm lined, this beach is great for swimming, body Surfing, families and just about any other water activity. With great views, totally uncrowded, picnic tables, parking, etc., it's the whole package. It would be silly to miss this beach if you're in the area.

La Selva Wildlife Refuge & Zoo

In this piece of paradise you will meet the Amazing Costa Rican Fauna (over 40 animals)surrounded by a tropical garden. In a friendly atmosphere, the owners will introduce you to a wonderful word of local animals. Most the animals are for reabilitation, breeding and for future releaseinto the wild.

Reviewed By Andy G - Seattle

$20 per person was not worth the very small backyard refuge. I definately appreciate what this couple is wanting to accomplish and the guide (wife) was very kind. The refuge was a place to see a few animals we probably wouldn't see otherwise, but only about 10 different species total in a small crowded setting. It would be worth the visit at about $3-5.

The tarmac from Liberia airport almost reaches the town if you come in from Nikoya (the coast road is another story)...which puts it on the radar as a beach resort - a bit of a jumbled up mix of silver hairs, families and would be surf dudes. The gentle waves make it a good choice for a first surf lesson or for teaching the kids

We took a boat tour with Barney to take advantage of fishing, snorkeling and dolphin-watching. We saw a pod of about 15 spotted and bottle-nosed dolphins, and two Olive Ridley turtles. My husband caught a tuna, which we cooked up for dinner that evening. This was a wonderful experience for our family of 4 and we definitely recommend it. Barney was a great guide, very friendly and knowledgeable about sea life. He also indulged us in our Spanish practice, which we appreciated very much.
