Black Swamp Bird Observatory

Love watching birds. Not an official birder and don't know one warbler from the other, but fascinated with them. Heard of this place and decided to check it out for a day trip from the Cleveland area. When we arrived we noticed people had traveled here from all over the country including one with an Alaska license plate. The park is located right on the shore of Lake Erie. It is heavily wooded with marshlands in several areas and there are several areas for parking. Once parked you head to the boardwalk which is quite extensive and meanders though the wooded area and marshland. It has several paths you can take with benches placed every so often for resting. Our visit was during peak migration so the place was quite full with visitors loaded with serious camera gear who clearly knew their birds. We spent about 2 hours wandering through and thoroughly enjoyed our time watching primarily warblers dart in and out of the trees. We also saw cowbirds, cardinals, Baltimore orioles, and red winged blackbirds. Also of note is the huge eagle nest with eagles that can be seen from the parking area driveway area. If you love the outdoors and birds I highly recommend a visit.

This area has many birds, even rare ones. The boardwalk trail is one of the best birding spots during The Biggest Week in Birding. I suggest stopping at the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge after!
