Lindholm Hoeje Museum

The burial site of Lindholm Hoje is one of the most beautiful ancient monuments in Denmark from late Iron Age and the Viking Age. Several hundred stone circles indicate the tombs. In the museum, you can see an exhibition on the lives of the Vikings on Lindholm Hoje as well as a new exhibition on the ancient time in the land of the Limfjorden.

Two significant historical realities exist in this quiet place on the outskirts of Aalborg. First, there is the original Viking burial site in use for nearly 600 years from 400AD. The site was used as a cremation area and then a burial grounds for the remains. Most of these graves are surrounded by stones laid in various shapes. Quite an impressive sight.
Second, this area had been covered by years of layers of shifting sand and not until 1952 was it excavated. Luckily, it was not lost forever, An amazing discovery.
The museum is also worth a stop. The exhibition shows what the village and their inhabitants looked like over the ages. The gift shop is also very nice.

Urtehaven

Reviewed By Westcoast8 - Germany

Urtehaven (the herb garden) is a quiet garden and museum off the beaten path. The focus of the exhibition is the history of the local area. It is interesting to see how the area has changed over the centuries/decades, and how our lifestyle has changed too. Don't miss the actual herb garden outside. There is even a small section for blind people with texts in braille. Great initiative!

The Park of Music

Kildeparken is one of the oldest parks in Aalborg, as it was landscaped in 1802. The beautiful park is known for its long list of classical pieces by famous artists, who have created both statues, scultpures and Fountains. The most famous piece in the park is the Park of Music, which is a collection of trees that have been planted since 1987 by artists who have performed in Aalborg Culture and Congress Center. Most of these trees can be activated to plays three different tunes of the artists, who includes, among others sir Cliff Richard, Sting, Kenny Rogers, Take That, Rod Stewart and sir Elton John. The charming park is hosting a string of events each year. The largest annual event in Kildeparken is by far the carnival of Aalborg in May, which attracts most than 20.000 guests to a huge party in Kildeparken. Moreover, it is the place for childrens activities with a modern playground, or a separate childrens carnival in May each year.

Such a brilliant idea and a nice way to spend half an hour or so listening to a wide variety of music. The location is easy to get to just the other side of the main train station. It is well located on a walk back from the viewing tower over the city. The park features 99 tress (currently) with a different artists associated to each tree, with the ability to play a medley of their greatest hits.
The only downside is that the speakers are loud enough for the music to carry a fair distance, therefore if someone has started playing the music of a tree 10m away, it will carry to you and interrupt your music. Don't be fooled, the area taken up by these trees isn't huge, despite the general park being quite big, and it is a collection of young trees rather than anything like a forest!
Either way, it is a fantastic idea and one of those things that you wish could be done in other cities - I just imagine that if it were in my home city (Birmingham UK) it wouldn't take very long to be vandalised by the local scallies.

Budolfi Cathedral

Budolfi Cathedral is placed on the highest spot in the old Aalborg between the old highstreet Algade and Gammeltorv. Its snow white facade gives the Cathedral a exalted expression even though its actually the smallest of its kind i Denmark. Budolfi is named after the english munk and saint, St. Bodolfus, who lived in the 700s, and was praised as a protector of travellers. Budolfi Cathedral has always played a big part in the history of Aalborg which is shown in the crest of Aalborg, which shows three church towers, whereas one is Budolfi. The other two is the Church of Our Lady Kirke and Aalborg Abbey Church. One of the reasons why Budolfi stands out is its amazing carillon which plays every hour from 8am to 10pm. The specific music is changed during the year, making it fit the different holidays and occasions. The melodies is controlled by a computer but can also be operated manually. The carillon has exsisted since 1934 but the 48 bells present today were made by the Dutch company Petit and Fritsen in 1970. The biggest bell weighs about 1250 kilos whereas the total weight of the carillon is 16 ton.

This stone church having been rebuilt several times is 800 years old. It is a combination of austerity and splendidly ornate paintings and statuary. It is marked by a magnificent clock in the tower. It has served as a place of worship for Catholics and then Protestants.

Aalborg Forsvars Og Garnisonsmuseum

Reviewed By Westcoast8 - Germany

This museum offers a plentitude of sights and activities, especially during the school holidays. The focus of the Exhibitions is the town garrison and all things military. It is evident that the texts have been written by 'nerds' who know their field of expertise. It is easy to lose oneself in a corner somewhere and not realize that hours have passed. Set plenty of time aside when visiting - even if you aren't a military 'freak'.
