The Firkin

If you think of a modern 'craft beer' bar, and expect something a bit on the pretentious side, this place will make you think again. It's not really a micropub either - it's quite big inside, with quite a lot of seats, either at tables, or stools around the edge of the single room, and at the bar. In fact, one of my few gripes about the place is that it can be difficult to get to the bar when it's busy and the stools in front are occupied. The decor is basic, and dogs are welcome in the wood-floored bar, which puts the emphasis firmly on the beer and other drinks. And the range doesn't disappoint. It changes regularly, with a good choice of handpulled cask ale, a couple of real ciders, and a chiller unit built into the wall behind the bar, which dispenses some more exotic key-keg craft beers. If that isn't enough, there are also a couple of fridges well stocked with a further good selection of bottled and canned ales and lagers. You can usually park on the main road outside (A49) or close by in one of the side streets, but there are also regular buses serving St Helens, Warrington and Leigh, and the pub's about 10 minutes' walk up the hill from Newton-le-Willows railway station. Don't waste your time coming on Mondays to Wednesdays, though - apart from the occasional special event, such as a 'meet the brewer', it only opens Thursday to Sunday. You know, if this place hadn't existed when it did, I might have opened something very similar myself!

Visited for the Peter Marsh stakes, paid for the County enclosure to ensure if the weather was poor we'd have somewhere to keep warm. As it was a sunny day we spent most of the time outside. Catered for gluten free, great parade ring and stands with seats opposite the finishing post. Fab day out.
