Having not cycled for a long time we hired bikes for our short stay in Mayo. A great way to see the countryside without the worries of cars or other vehicles. We cycled from Westport to Achill. Would definitely do it again

Darragh and Martin were wonderful, and even though it was early in the season, we were able to catch some Dogfish and crabs. The scenery in Clew Bay is beautiful, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! It was a perfect activity for our family of four, and gave us the opportunity to see the area from a different perspective.

Well worth a stop off the main N59 beyond Westport. A well-preserved ruin overlooking the water in a peaceful, untouristed setting. It shows that, regardless of the century, people appreciated a lovely location. Now, the surrounding cemetery is well-kept and there is much antiquity to observe. Breathe in the clean air and the history of the place.

Amazing stained glass by Harry Clarke from the 1920s.
The church monumentally suits at the high point of Newport and is surrounded by spectacular scenery. Inside the church, the stained glass windows behind the altar are absolutely gorgeous. They are one of kind and not to be missed when visiting Newport.

It is grand to drive at leisurely pace from Newport to Mulranny, to meander down the many lanes to the left and discover treasures.. Coming in sight of this castle keep/watchtower was sheerly magical. A wild place, sea and seaweed and a watchful heron. Leave the car and wander along the shore... This has not changed in centuries. A stability and a continuity.

I took loads of photos from the viaduct - of the river when the tide was in and when the tide was out - of the river banks , the workmanship displayed in the building of the bridge, of dogs splashing down below me and, of course, views of the town and the church on the hill.

If you have already climbed Croagh Patrick or like us you are about Westport in windy and wet weather, this is a good alternative walk. Maybe it was the rain and the wind on the day we did it, but I would consider this a challenging enough walk. The first half is stony and boggy underfoot and it ends on forest roads. Starting fom the bothy, the walk goes right into remote and rugged Mountains. This path is very well marked with posts and occasional timing estimates. There are three distance and difficulty options, blue, red and purple. All are well signposted and the blue cuts out a lot of the challenging terrain but still gets into the hills. We did the red which is about 30mins shorter than the full purple. Due to poor weather we did not take much time to take in the scenery, but overall if you are looking for something more challenging than the Greenway, this is a good walk. I got directions for the walk from the mayo trails website which while good on directions is vague on distance. For info. The distance from Newport to the start of the walk at the stone bothy is approx. 14km. This is along a narrow, sometimes hair raising, sheep dodging road. Overall if you want to get off the beaten track this is a good walk. If you want a nice and interesting picnic area you could also drive to the stone bothy and go up the forest track (the end of the looped walk) , for a lovely river walk and picnic area. This appears to me where a previous reviewer cycled. There is no way you could cycle the red or purple trail after the forest track.

Take a moment to enjoy this beautiful old church with some unique 'stations of the cross' and a decades old confessional. The Harry Clarke triptych of stained glass windows were an amazing surprise, I wasn't aware they were here but what a bonus! So colourful, detailed and imaginative, he was a master craftsman. The panoramic view from the top of the steps is magnificent, you get a real feel for the surrounding area. Definitely worth visiting whether you're religious or not.

The premier airsoft site in the north west. This is a members run site located on around 100 hectares of prime woodland with rivers and streams intersecting pine and spruce Forests. Game days mainly Saturdays except the last Sunday of each month.

I brought my friends out for to try this site for my stag weekend and all I can say is wow!!! Great site, fantastic players and fun game modes. Everyone enjoyed themselves. My best man, two of my friends and myself have become members. Cannot recommend this site highly enough.
