Top 10 Things to do in Menemen, Turkey

July 20, 2017 Darwin Bolte

Menemen (Greek: Μενεμένη), is a district of İzmir Province in Turkey as well as the district's central town. The district extends on a fertile plain formed by the alluvial soil carried by the Gediz River. Menemen's district area neighbors the following district areas from east to west; Aliağa and Foça to the north and Bornova, Karşıyaka and Çiğli to the south, these last two being among İzmir's metropolitan districts. Menemen district also has a 27 km (17 mi) long coastline in the west and neighbors Manisa Province to the east. The town of Menemen is located at a distance of 35 km (22 mi) from İzmir center (Konak Square). Settlement across the district is loosely scattered along the Greater Metropolitan Area of İzmir in the south and consists of isolated villages along prairies in the north, which results in an average urbanization rate of only 42 per cent. The economy still relies on agriculture and stock breeding in large part, although the production and export of leather, ceramic and other earthenware products, as well as potentially of plastic products, based in two separate and specialized organized industrial zones made important steps forward during the last decade. Menemen's earthenware pottery products are famous across Turkey since centuries. These two organized industrial zones as well as activities rebounding from the adjacent İzmir metropolitan area gain an increasing importance in the district's economy. Nevertheless, Gediz River, whose lower basin crosses Menemen plain to join the sea within the district boundaries still constitutes the lifeline of the region and matters relating to the river's flow as well as its present rate of rather high pollution is a matter of constant debate. The level of education is high in Menemen with literacy rate reaching 99%.

I went there because my son is interested in cars, because some friends asked me about it... so I wanted to discover myself. A bit hard to find, an unbelievable location in the industrial aerea of Torbali / Izmir. But WAWWWWW once I was inside, it is so impressive, so well maintained, so attractive... even for people (like me) who are almost not interested in cars..... A real discovery!

Arkas Art Center

Reviewed By bos6116 - Memphis, Tennessee

This was my third visit to the Arkas Art Center in as many years and I intend to go back when I'm in Izmir. The exhibits are located in a two-story, moderate size building; staff is attentive. Entrance is free. On all occasions we were left to roam on our own; while there are no guided tours for individual visitors (that I am aware of), there are descriptions of the exhibited items as well as the collections in English and French as well as Turkish, which is very convenient. The exhibited items come from the Arkas private collection as well as from other European galleries, museums, etc. (have spotted some from the Louvre, Bibliotheque National, etc.). I find the exhibits to be well curated and informative, esp. if one is interested in Izmir, the Levant, and Anatolia. Overall, it's a little gem in the heart of the city.

The cafes and bars together with wonderful restaurants and unusual shops create a good international atmosphere where people from all over the world meet. I was served one of the best coffee's I've ever had outside of Italy. Highly recommended.

Entrance for students is 2 TL and 5 TL for adults. It is far from city center but truly to worth to visit it. Please also consider the temperature of the outside before going because in summer it is pretty hot in July. Also bring your camera and buy something to eat and drink in the entrance because it is very large and there is no place to buy in all parts. This is necessary to get a map in the entrance.

What a bargain just 8YTL to go up and down, each journey takes about 5 mins and you will get some great views of the city and bay as you ascend. I was told we couldnt take food up to the top and we were searched on entry but most people seemed to have their own food and have a picnic. Food and drinks are available at the top from any of the many vendors. There is also an area for BBQing Im not sure how that worked if you have to rent the BBQs and buy the meat at the shop or just take your own. The scenery from the top really is beautiful so I highly recommend it. To get here take the Izban to F Altoy the final stop, take exit A to the bis station (Auto Gara) The first bus stop you see on exit is the one you need, take bus 169 and exit at stop TELERIFIK or just look out for the cables on the right of the bus and get off immediately after them and walk back 200M.
