Forty-five km from Paris is the newly-renovated Gendarmerie Museum (Musee de la Gendarmerie Nationale). The museum reopened in October this year (2015).
You reach Melun by taking the RER B2 train from Chatelet-Les-Halles or from Gare de Lyon. It will take you 1 hr if you are on a train that stops at each station along the way, or 30 minutes if you are on a non-stop Paris/Melun or Melun/Paris train. At peak travelling hours the trains can be very full.
At Melun station you take Bus D to the museum. The stop is Ecole de gendarmerie. You can also take Bus F and the stop will be Gendarmerie Briand.
It admittance fee is 7 euros and 5 euros for those over 65.
The museum focuses on the history of France's Gendarmerie rather than on crime fighting. (The Gendarmerie falls under the Ministry of Defence, whereas the police fall under the Ministry of the Interior.) And no 'gendarme' is not French for policeman.
The Gendarmerie payed a large role in French colonies (Africa and IndoChina) and so too in the two World Wars and you will therefore see the various uniforms, weapons and vehicles.
Unfortunately, there is rather little about crime fighting.
This is certainly an attraction for those interested in military matters, but it is not an attraction for children.
There is a souvenir shop where everything is quite expensive.
There is no tea room or restaurant.
The toilet facilities are excellent.

Vaux le Vicomte is the creation of three men brought together by Nicolas Fouquet, Louis 14th's finance minister, the landcape architect Andre le Nôtre, the architect Louis le Vau and the painter-decorator Charles le Brun. The perfect harmony between architecture and landscape is the result of their collaborative genius. From its unveiling at the famous fête of august 17th, 1661, Vaux le Vicomte aroused the envy of the Sun King and became the model that inspired the whole of Europe, including Versailles.Vaux le Vicomte can be visited during the day or at night with 2000 candles (on Saturdays from may to beginning of october)Easy access by train or by bus from paris.
The same architect and artisans that constructed Versailles built this 17th c. masterpiece for Nicholas Fouquet, a former Superintendent of Finances to Louis XIV. Supposedly, Fouquet was jailed for life and the property seized when the King
attended a lavish event there and was angered at the sumptuous living arrangements of his minister. Decorated for the holidays like a winter wonderland, it is a must see for visitors of all ages. View chateau apartments, carriage house and Gardens. Open Weekends only in Dec. Train via Gare d’Est towards Provins. Exit at Verneuil l’Etang station and take shuttle bus direct to and from Chateau. Less than 1 hour from Paris. Dining and gift shops on premises. Carriage rides. A very special place.

Nice museum with an amazing collection of French aviation engines, from the early beginnings up to the space age. Also houses a nice collection of old motorbikes. Not open every day, difficult to reach by public transport but free entrance and certainly worth a visit. Check the website for location and opening hours.

Restored by the Conseil général de Seine-et-Marne, this castle, rare example of medieval military architecture in Île-de-France, strikes up a permanent dialogue between patrimony and contemporary artistic creation.
This castle left something to be desired - the main attraction was the parapet walk around the walls of the castle. Views of the area from the walkway were very lovely.

This 49,000-acre forest is one of the biggest in France.
There is an exceptional amount of bouldering to be done in this Forrest. We spent a solid 4 days climbing and have barely scratched the surface!
Lots of great shaded areas for lunch and the paths/circuits are all reasonably self explanatory. The problems are tough and my confidence took a bit of a knock but overall I absolutely loved it!
Will absolutely be returning.
Would recommend staying at Bois-Le-Roi at a lovely place called the "tiny house". The gite is perfect for 2-4 people and mats can be hired from the great host. (Can be found on AirBnB)
