Mazunte is a small beach town on the Pacific coast in Oaxaca, Mexico (15°39′53″N 96°33′14″W / 15.66485°N 96.55388°W / 15.66485; -96.55388). It is located 22 km southwest of San Pedro Pochutla on coastal Highway 200. Mazunte is located some 10 km to the west of Puerto Angel and just about 1 km from San Agustinillo and 264 km south of the capital of Oaxaca. There are two etymologies for the name. Some sources state that “Mazunte” is derived from a Nahuatl phrase, “maxotetia” which means “please deposit eggs here.” However, older residents of the community state that it is from the word “mizontle,” used by locals to refer to a crab species that used to be very abundant in the area.

Join the hippies on a trek 1 km up the mountain and out to the point, to watch the sunset over stunning ocean views. The path starts at the cemetery, so easier to ask for directions to THAT than the trail itself. Take a flashlight in case you don't head back down before it gets dark.

We chose the river hike since in this period of the year, there were no other activities available. It resulted to be an excellent choice! Our guide Daniel was very friendly and explained us in a very detailed way how we had to manage for the differents steps of the hike, and the security rules. We had a lot of fun and adrenaline, and also a simple and delicious breakfast and "pineapple time" in the river. We always felt very safe and enjoyed the adventure a lot. The landscapes we saw were beautiful. We recommend it to anyone wanting to do something a little bit different from the beach and the sea in Mazunte, it will be the occasion to discover another aspects of the wonderful region of Oaxaca.

We had friends to visited it previously and strongly recommended it. Taxis charged 80 pesos from Mazunte but the local bus (colectivo) charges 5 pesos each person. It is a 10 minute-ride. Note the local colectivo is not appropriate for elderly people or people with motor disabilities. We received a great explanation at the beginning. Note we selected the red tour. This includes only wild life tour around the pond in contrast with the white tour run by a different group that apparently has animals in captivity. We saw several birds and iguanas but we didn't see crocodiles. At the end, the splashed water and "called the crocodiles" by whistling which did not sound so spontaneous. It is better to do it during a cloudy day. Anyway, the whole explanation about the pond cycles, beach sand types and wild life was appropriate.

We loved this place from the arrival moment. We found everything enchanting: the little town, the atmosphere, the energetic ocean waves. We strongly recommend staying by El Rinconcito where going into the ocean water is safer. It is a perfect place for couples looking for a calm vacation time. It is not a massive touristic place one hour away from Huatulco airport. Notes, airport taxis charge 800-1100 pesos to bring you there. We recommend ti call to your hotel and arrange a 500 pesos-airport pick up. All visited restaurants were great.

The retreat was the genesis of a profound experience that is still revealing itself. All aspects of the meditation, yoga and lecture sessions are well planned and clearly presented. The accommodations are simple but appropriate to the retreat environment, food is delicious, fresh and lovingly prepared.

Simply amazing!! First time I went out paddling with Sunset Paddle Tours, we watched a truly spectacular sunset while having a picnic on the boards after a good session of paddling on the beautiful Pacific Ocean in Mazunte. Paddling is challenging but quite fun once you find the way, and Kino makes sure that everyone is safe at all times. Second time we went out we saw lots of turtles and even whales from a very short distance, the closest was like 5 m away from us! Totally priceless! I also got to practice Stand Up Paddle Yoga on the board and of course lots of paddling :) Unforgettable experience, everyone who visits Mazunte should not miss it.

Pretty basic place: outdoor enclosures and tanks with turtles in them, information placards (mostly in Spanish) and a handful of indoor enclosures (some of which don't even have real turtles in them!) There's also an informational film you can watch inside, with a choice of Spanish or English narration.
The place could use some work. It's not as visitor-friendly as the Tortugranja on Isla Mujeres, but I'm glad there's a place dedicated to turtle conservation on Mexico's Pacific Coast.
I went here without signing up for a tour. Some may benefit from going with a tour group, especially as part of a multi-site day trip, but I didn't feel it was necessary. I just spent the day walking around town and hiking up to Punta Cometa.

I really enjoy Mermejita, it's a little less busy than Mazunte and Rinconcito and there is also access to Punta Cometa. It's not safe to swim at this beach, you'll probably see quite a few people doing it anyway, ignore that. The waves are very strong and high, and there is a current that could pull you out to sea. I've been here every year for 4 years and I always hear stories about who died this year getting carried off or drowning. Don't let me scare you from enjoying this beautiful view or playing after the break of the waves. I just would highly recommend fully going into the water.

I visited the turtle centre to help a cause. The turtle centre was set up after most of the turtle population was hunted to the point that there were almost none left in the area. Once the government set a ban they opened the centre to give jobs to the fisherman who were not longer able to hunt the turtles. Now there are so many beautiful turtles at the centre and on the area Beaches. To me this is an amazing show of what we can do to help the environment and I love it.
