Jialeshuei (佳樂水) is located in the southernmost of Taiwan’s east coast in Pingtung County. It is 14 km (8.7 mi) north of Eluanbi Park (鵝鑾鼻公園) inside Kenting National Park (墾丁國家公園). Jialeshuei used to be called Chialuoshui, which means waterfall in Taiwanese. It was renamed to Jialeshuei by the late President Chiang Ching-Kuo (蔣經國) in hopes to bring peace and harmony to the area. During the same time he also named the unnamed waterfall as Shanhai Waterfalls (山海瀑). Most of the tourists will skip this attraction because it is located in a remote area of the national park. We visited Jialeshuei years ago and could not forget its unusual rocky seacoast. Therefore, we decided to revisit it. We drove on the beautiful, winding Provincial Highway 26 (佳鵝公路) along the east coast which reminded me of the Highway 1 in the US west coast. Both scenic roads share the similar experience of driving and amazing spots. Be sure to stop at the Longpan (龍磐) and Fongchueisha (風吹砂) to admire mother nature's masterpieces. We continued driving to the T intersection and followed the sign to the Jialeshuei Scenic Area. Turning right on the T intersection leads to the Gangkou Beach (港口海灘) which is the location for the 2017 Pingtung Jialeshuei International Surfing Competition. It was a short drive to the parking lot after paying for the ticket to enter the Jialeshuei Scenic Area. It is a large parking lot with parking for both cars and tourist coaches. We needed to walk on the path along the coast years ago, but today they provide a tour minibus drove us along the path to the 30m (98 ft) Shanhai Waterfalls. It was an open-air minibus and the driver pointed out those famous bizarre rock formations, such as the Chessboard Rocks (棋盤石), Honeycomb Rocks, Frog Rocks (青蛙石), Sea Horse Rocks (海馬石) & many others. The Shanhai Waterfalls did not have much water when we visited. You can use your imagination to name your rocks. Unfortunately, the driver could not speak other languages beside Mandarin and Taiwanese. It was a great experience to see so many spectacular shapes of rocks. It is helpful if you learn some basic knowledge of the geological background before you come. It opens 7:30 to 18:00 daily and the admission is NT$80 per person plus NT$50 for car park. By the way, the restaurants nearby are quite “local”. Do not get me wrong - it was not too bad, but it was not to the standards we normally expect in the city.
