Route des Cretes

Reviewed By 658marshallb - Ferney-Voltaire, France

Extraordinary views of valleys and mountains from the road, which was built during WWI to facilitate French military movements. This was the border between Germany and France from 1871 until the end of WWI. The route goes from about 3000 feet to over 4000 feet, and there are several restaurants on the way, with great views. Also very popular with hikers.

Metz Cathedral

One of the tallest cathedrals in France, the 12th-century building is also known for its extensive use of stained-glass windows.

Reviewed By thomasozbun - Vicenza, Italy

Mostly built in the Gothic style between the 13th and 16th centuries it holds the largest expanse of stained glass in the world, most of which from famous artists throughout history such as Hermann von Munster from the 13th century and modernist Marc Chagall from the 20th. As soon as we entered, in fact, the interior was immense and amazing with a huge nave all decorated with stained glass. We also admired the sculpted extior too, built in the local yellow Jaumont Limestone.

Lac de Gerardmer

Reviewed By Luisguiper - Bogota, Colombia

I joined a trail running event starting and finishing at the lake shore. The trail was indeed nice, running and walking through the fantastic forest. After the effort, I relaxed for a while, not just to recover, but also to admire such a beautiful landscape on such a warm, sunny day. Kayaking and SUP services are offered. Restaurants and a parking area are available, as well as toilettes.

Observatoire de Merelle

Reviewed By 729dianea - North Yorkshire, United Kingdom

Frustrated by the red herrings of the 'sentiers débalisés' that led us through areas of felled trees and trees that were being swung around by forestry vehicles, we were finally rewarded by the most beautiful of views over Gérardmer. I nearly had a panic attack climbing up the marvellous, wooden/concrete tower but I am so glad I did! It was quite an adventure for us and well worth the effort- but it would have been great to have marked paths through the forested slopes!

Citadelle Souterraine de Verdun

Reviewed By frenchie_reenacts - Hauts-de-France, France

I visited the Citadel in Verdun for the first time; all Covid measures in place and everything was very well done in that manner. The lady operating the welcome desk was very lovely, managed to find our reservation, etc and we were shown where to wait for the wagonnet. It’s a very interesting ride; taking one through difference scenarios and stories throughout the citadel (a captain, a group of higher ranking officers, the bakers, etc). The most exciting bit was the trench experience towards the end; you ride through a trench system with a moving screen showing a trench re-enactment. When the wagonnet tour ends after about 25 minutes, you’re prompted to walk through to the small exhibition about the French Unknown Warrior. Very humbling and sad story. Excellent overall ; only downside was no postcards or real ephemera for the museum itself!
